No. 7 Men's Ice Hockey Ties Johnson & Wales, 3-3; Gulls Earn Extra Point In Shootout
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 7 Endicott men's ice hockey team tied Johnson & Wales, 3-3, on Friday afternoon in Conference of New England (CNE) play at Schneider Arena, on the campus of Providence College.
The Wildcats opened the game with a 2-0 lead after the first period and carried that lead for much of the second period. John Goldowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) found the back of the net with Endicott shorthanded off a stretch pass feed from Collin Kleiser (Churchville, Pa.) at the 17:02 mark of the second period.
Johnson & Wales then regained their two-goal advantage off a breakaway chance just over six minutes into the third period.
Trailing 3-1 now in the third period, the Gulls scored twice in the span of 1:11 to force the game to overtime.
Noah Gibbs (Saint-Basile, New Brunswick, Canada) cut the Wildcats lead to one after receiving a feed from Kyle Furey (Marblehead, Mass.) in front of the goal for his 11th goal of the season.
Then it was Jack Costanzo (Gloucester, Mass.) who equalized the game with 59 seconds remaining. With the goalie pulled and the extra skater on the ice, the sophomore beat the goalie five-hole with a shot from the far circle to send the game to overtime.
After a scoreless overtime period, Anthony Cafarelli (Middleton, Mass.) buried the winning shot in the shootout on the team's fourth attempt.
Peter Sterling (Manassas, Va.) then stopped Johson & Wales' counter to earn the Gulls the extra point in the standings.
In total, the freshman made 17 saves in the contest as his record goes to 19-3-2 this season.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Gulls are 13-0-0 all-time against Johnson & Wales.
- With his shorthanded tally, Goldowski is now tied for third all-time in shorthanded goals with six.
- Costanzo has now recorded a point in five of his last six games played.
- Fourth game this season with two assists for Furey.
WHAT'S NEXT
Endicott (19-3-3, 14-3-3 CNE) and Johnson & Wales (8-14-3, 6-12-2 CNE) now enter the CNE Tournament. Both teams' seed, opponent, date and time of their next game are TBD and will be decided after this weekend's results around the conference.
