STANDISH, Maine - The Endicott men's soccer team traveled to Saint Joseph's (Maine) on Sunday afternoon to wrap up their back to back weekend of non-conference matchups. Seniors Diego Slobotzky (Mexico City, Mexico) and Connor Gibbs (Westborough, Mass.) each tallied goals for help lift the Gulls to a 2-0 victory. Endicott improves to 2-3-0 while the Monks fall to 1-4-0.
The Gulls finished their weekend going undefeated after beating North Shore rivals, Salem State 4-0 yesterday afternoon while earning their second triumph of the season today. Endicott will see action next on Friday, September 13th, as they travel to Nichols for the first conference game of the season. Saint Joe's will play next on Wednesday, September 10th as they travel to Southern Maine for a 4:00 p.m. matchup.
The first half was evenly split as the Blue and Green just outshot their opponent by one (6-5) while the Monks earned one more corner kick in their favor (3-2). In the opening minutes Saint Joe's worked senior goalkeeper, Alex Jorge (Billerica, Mass.) forcing three early saves to keep the Monks off the board.
Endicott worked to answer back but the Monks kept peppering Jorge. Finally at the 39 minute mark Gibbs received a feed from freshman Brayden Nielsen (Essex Junction, Vt.) to earn his second goal of the weekend and the season. Slobotzky was eager to find the back of the net in the remaining minutes of the first half, ripping two shots that just sailed wide leaving the Gulls with a 1-0 lead entering halftime.
The second half showed a different group of Gulls that picked up where they left off in the end of the first by controlling the remaining 45 minutes of play. Endicott took nine shots in the half to their opponents two while forcing Monks goalkeeper to made three saves.
Both sides worked their pressure in the final third for the first 24 minutes of the half with the Gulls owning possession. At the 73rd minute Slobotzky blasted a shot at goalkeeper, Robert Petrosillo (Methuen, Mass.) that was saved but Slobotzky picked up the rebound and sent in a second shot that found the back of the net to take a 2-0 lead. Slobotzky followed Gibbs as he also scored for the second straight day, after tallying a goal in yesterday's 4-0 victory over Salem State.
The Gulls worked the Monks defense for the remainder of the half but could not find the back of the net. However the goals were enough as the Endicott defense, led by Jorge kept the Monks off the board to earn their second shutout of the weekend and the season.
Jorge walked away with five saves while his counterparts, split duties and made three stops each in the 90 minutes.
