Endicott To Induct Four Student-Athletes Into Athletics Hall Of Fame On September 28

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott College Department of Athletics and Recreation is proud to announce that during September's Homecoming and Family Weekend, former student-athletes Matthew Bishop '07 (Woburn, Mass.), Caitlin Flynn '10 M'11 (Southold, N.Y.), Michael Lane '12 (Medfield, Mass.), and Colleen Pepin '12 (Fairhaven, Mass.) will all be inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame, Class of 2019, on Saturday, September 28.

The aforementioned group of student-athletes will be the 22nd class inducted into the Endicott Athletics Hall of Fame since its inaugural membership began in 1994. All four student-athletes will formally be inducted on Saturday, September 28 during the Athletics Tribute and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony inside MacDonald Gymnasium at 9 AM.

ENDICOTT ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME, CLASS OF 2019

MATTHEW BISHOP '07, BASEBALL

Matthew Bishop's career encompasses many historic feats but none more important than being the first Endicott student-athlete to ever be drafted by a major league team in 2005 when the Houston Astros selected him in the 37th round.

His standout career also includes being named to Baseball America's Top Prospect List in 2006, helping the Gulls win their first-ever NCAA Tournament game against Amherst (12-10) with a near two-inning save on May 21, 2004, one All-Region honor, Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Player of the Year honors in 2006, and two All-CCC First Team selections.

Bishop accomplished all this as a two-way player for the Gulls hitting .349/.457/.646 (.avg/.obp/.slg) at the plate to go along with 105 runs, 140 hits (29 2B, 9 3B, 24 HR), 87 RBI, 53 walks, and 17 stolen bases. On the mound, Bishop went 14-6 overall in 154.2 innings pitched for a 2.33 ERA. He also struck out 177 batters during that span and still ranks first in program history in strikeouts per nine innings at 10.30. He still holds the career program records for highest slugging percentage and most home runs as well.

As a team, during Bishop's three-year career from 2004-06, Endicott went 78-58 overall, 44-16 in conference games, won two CCC Championships (2004, 2006) and one Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) crown (2005).

"During Matt's time at Endicott, he was one of the most humble, quiet, and driven players that Endicott has ever had a part of any athletic program," said Endicott College Assistant Vice President, Director of Athletics Dr. Brian Wylie. "Motivated to be great, Matt always challenged himself and his teammates to push themselves beyond the limits they thought possible; truly defining his great leadership. One of the most prolific five-tool players that Endicott has ever had, his impact on the field and preparation for the field, earned him a draft selection to the Houston Astros.

"To be inducted into the Endicott Athletics Hall of Fame is an absolute honor," said Bishop. "I had the privilege to attend a school whose mission is to better their students and athletes. I was fortunate to be surrounded by a team who motivated one another daily towards our goals. I can't thank my family enough for all the support they gave me which allowed me to have such an amazing opportunity and experience."

CAITLIN FLYNN '10 M'11, WOMEN'S SOCCER

Considered one of the best playmakers in Endicott women's soccer program history, Caitlin Flynn finished her illustrious career (2006-09) with the Gulls as a two-time Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Player of the Year and three-time conference champion.

Flynn's four-year span at The Nest also featured four NCAA Tournament appearances – including a program-best Sweet 16 appearance in 2006 – as well as a 69-18-5 overall record (.777) and a 46-4-1 conference record (.912).

Alongside those accomplishments, Flynn received six All-Region accolades and three All-CCC First Team honors. Flynn's career numbers include 48 goals and 31 assists for a total of 127 career points in 89 games played.

Her name can be also found all over the women's soccer record book, highlighted by the following career rankings: goals (4th), goals per game (5th), game-winning goals (2nd, 20), assists (1st), assists per game (2nd), points (4th), and points per game (4th, 1.43).

"Caitlin is arguably one of the most graceful and unselfish players that the women's soccer program has ever had. She had the unique ability to make some of the most difficult plays look simple and seem effortless," said Wylie. "As a quiet leader, she made every teammate on the field better because of her unselfishness, athleticism, and her unique and dynamic ability to be involved in almost every critical play on the field. Perhaps one of her greatest strengths was her razor-sharp focus and mental toughness."

"It's an incredible honor and privilege to be inducted into the Endicott Athletics Hall of Fame for women's soccer! My time as a student-athlete at Endicott represents one of the most cherished phases of my life and I'm thankful for all the wonderful memories created on and off the field," said Flynn. "I'll always be grateful for the consistent support given by my friends, teammates, Coach Kenyon, and of course my family who almost always made the trip from New York on game days! Endicott College, the campus, and the community will always hold a special place in my heart and I couldn't be more grateful for my experiences."   

MICHAEL LANE '12, FOOTBALL

Without question, Michael Lane is the most prolific running back to ever wear an Endicott uniform.

In 43 career games, Lane compiled 874 rushing attempts for 4,337 yards and 32 touchdowns (all program records). His 4,337 yards are nearly more than double the second place student-athlete on the list, while his 32 career TDs exactly double up the next person in the record books. He also ranks first all-time in the following career categories: rushing yards per game (100.9), all-purpose yards (5,676), all-purpose yards per game (132.0), and touchdowns scored (36). Alongside those numbers, Lane holds every major single-season rushing record in program history.

Lane's athletic awards are numerous, highlighted by his BSN All-America Third Team selection in 2011. His other athletic accomplishments include one All-Region selection, four NEFC Boyd First Team honors, and the 2008 NEFC Boyd Offensive Rookie of the Year award. As a team, behind Lane's play, Endicott went 27-16 overall (.628) and 17-11 in conference play (.607) over his four-year career. The Gulls made history on three different occasions with their first-ever NEFC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2010 prior to winning their first-ever ECAC North Bowl title in 2011.

Academically, Lane is the first football student-athlete in program history to claim CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, which is considered to be the most prestigious academic award in all of NCAA sports. He also was a three-time Academic All-Conference honoree.

"Michael was such a dangerous and durable weapon on the football field for four straight years. A great leader on and of the field and his work ethic was not only unmatched by others but was contagious," said Wylie. "Mike's toughness and pure strength always gave opponents difficulty. The mark of success can sometimes be measured in how one transcended the game while he played, and I think that truly describes Mike as a player. He could step on the field today and make a tremendous impact."

"I am honored to be inducted into Endicott's Athletic Hall of Fame and grateful to have spent four years at Endicott as a student-athlete," said Lane. "I would like to thank all my coaches, teammates, friends, and family, that have supported me along the way. Football has taught me many valuable life lessons that apply to my career and the outside world."

COLLEEN PEPIN '12, WOMEN'S SOCCER

The true definition of a student-athlete, Colleen Pepin was exceptional on and off the field at Endicott.

Academically, Pepin will forever hold claim to being the first Endicott female student-athlete to ever receive Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) organization. The CoSIDA Academic All-America program is regarded as the most prestigious academic awards program in all of NCAA sports.

The academic honors didn't stop there for Pepin, however, as she was named the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2011. She also earned three CCC Academic All-Conference laurels and three Endicott Academic Varsity Club accolades during her career. 

Athletically, Pepin was as natural of a scorer as it gets. In 88 career games, Pepin compiled 71 goals and 20 assists for 162 total points. She still ranks among the top-5 in several categories within the program including: points (2nd), points per game (2nd), goals (2nd), goals per game (3rd), game-winning goals (1st, 23), assists (7th), assists per game (7th), games played (7th), and games started (6th). As a team, Endicott went 62-23-6 overall (.714), 41-6-1 in conference play (.856), and captured one CCC Championship during her time as a Gull.

"Colleen was, perhaps, one of the purest and classic goal scorer's the women's soccer program has ever had. Her ability to create plays individually and establish separation because of her strength and physical play, created total disruption for defenders," said Wylie. "She was quiet, but on the field, a tenacious competitor that always seemed to be in the right place at the right time and her career statistics speak on their own merit."

"Being inducted into the Endicott Athletics Hall of Fame is truly an honor. I am so grateful for the four years I had at Endicott College both on and off the field as a member of the women's soccer program," said Pepin. "I can't thank my amazing family, teammates, and coaches enough for always supporting and encouraging me over the years. Being a student-athlete had its fair share of challenges, but the friendships, life skills, and discipline it instilled in me during my time at Endicott are irreplaceable."

ABOUT THE ENDICOTT ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME

The purpose of the Endicott Athletics Hall of Fame is to give lasting recognition to those individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the achievements and prestige of Endicott in the field of athletics, and who have continued to demonstrate in their lives the values imparted by intercollegiate athletics. Plaques of these chosen few are enshrined on the walls of the Post Center.

Each class is chosen by a committee of seven members consisting of the Director of Athletics, an Assistant Athletic Director, an alumni relations representative, the Faculty Athletics Representative, a sports information representative, and two current head coaches. Candidates are submitted electronically and each individual is evaluated according to the criteria for nomination.

Since 1994, 51 former student-athletes, coaches, faculty members, and administrators have been inducted into the Endicott Athletics Hall of Fame.
