LAKE WALES, Fla. – The Endicott College baseball team opener their 2012 season at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational and were one-hit by the St. Joe’s Monks who emerged with a 5-1 victory.
The game, which was the first of the season for each team, was supposed to be the start of a double-header but the second game was cancelled due to heavy rains.
Chad Rafferty (Keene, N.H.) pitched six shutout innings for the Monks, allowing just one hit, a double by Gulls third baseman EJ Martinez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in the sixth inning. The Gulls would score their lone run in that inning after loading the bases with nobody out.
Daniel Mello (Peabody, Mass.) and Harry Oringer (Dartmouth, Mass.) each drew walks, putting runners on every base for junior designated hitter Eric Lemke (Southington, Conn.). Lemke grounded into a double play, bringing in Martinez but putting the brakes on an Endicott rally that ended when Ralph Fidaleo (Fairfield, Conn.) struck out swinging, one of six strikeouts for Rafferty and seven for St. Joe’s pitchers.
The Monks scored a single run in the third and two runs in each of the next two innings to take a 5-0 lead. Catcher Joe Coyne (Duxbury, Mass.) was 2-3 with a double and an RBI and first baseman Mike Pratt (Dartmouth, Mass.) had an RBI double in the sixth before scoring on a single by Coyne.
Benjamin Petrides (Belchertown, Mass.) pitched five and two-thirds of an inning and took the loss after giving up five runs on 9 hits. Petrides struck out four batters and walked just two Monks.
The win went to Rafferty who allowed just the one run on one hit and three walks. Andrew Devereaux (Hope Valley, R.I.) pitched a perfect seventh inning while striking out a batter.
The Gulls will continue their spring trip tomorrow with a doubleheader against Bowdoin College, starting at 10:00 am.
The Monks will face Framingham State in Winter Haven, Florida, with first pitch set for 9:00 am.
