No. 15 Baseball Drops Doubleheader With Colby, 2-1 and 11-10 (13 Inn.)
WATERVILLE, Maine — The No. 15 nationally ranked Endicott baseball team was swept in its Sunday afternoon doubleheader to Colby, 2-1 and 11-10 (13 Inn.).
GAME ONE: COLBY 2, NO. 15 ENDICOTT 1
WP (2-0): Thomas Rioux (Derry, N.H.) — 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
LP (0-1): Evan Scully (Maynard, Mass.) — 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
SV (1): Matt Higgins (Norwell, Mass.) — 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
The Mules struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but the Gulls responded with one of their own in the top of the second after James Benestad (Northborough, Mass.) drove in Cade Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.) with a fielder's choice RBI groundout.
Unfortunately for the Gulls, that was the only scoring of game one.
The Mules pulled ahead with a solo shot in the fifth, and that was all the scoring in the contest.
Endicott stranded 12 runners on base, unable to find a big hit late to even the score.
GAME TWO: COLBY 11, NO. 15 ENDICOTT 10 (13 INN.)
WP (1-0): Matt Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) — 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
LP (0-1): Derek Roberts (Wayland, Mass.) — 0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
In game two, the offense awoke and capitalized early and often.
After Colby snagged a first-inning run, the Gulls quickly put up six between the second and third innings.
In the second, John Fusco (Naples, Fla.) got the Gulls on the board with an RBI single through the left side of the infield, plating TJ Liponis (Scarborough, Maine) from second. A batter later, Finn Adams (Stratham, N.H.) put the Gulls in front (2-1) with an RBI groundout to second.
Bernardo highlighted the four-run second with a three-run blast into right-center field, making it a 6-2 Gulls lead.
AJ Hamm (Shrewsbury, Mass.) tacked on two more with a two-run shot over the left field fence in the fourth to pad the lead (8-2).
Unfortunately for the Blue and Green, the Mules battled back, and ultimately tied things up at eight in the bottom of the fifth.
In the top of the eighth, Hamm belted another homer to left to put Endicott in front, 9-8, but Colby again knotted the score in the bottom half of the inning.
Brenden Walsh (Reading, Mass.) put the Gulls in front once more with his first longball of the season in the top of the ninth, but the Mules refused to quit and forced extras with a run of their own (10-10).
In the following three frames, Kyan Bagshaw (Amherst, N.H.) tossed shutdown relief in his first appearance of the season. He fanned four and allowed just one hit across three innings of work.
After neither team was able to score in the 10th, 11th, or 12th innings, the Mules walked it off in the 13th to sweep the doubleheader.
