Baseball Bests Salem State, 8-3
BOSTON, Mass. — The Endicott baseball team defeated Salem State, 8-3, after a late push from the offense in Wednesday evening's non-conference contest from Monan Park.
WP (1-1): Ben Gill (Sanford, Maine) — 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
LP (0-1): Alex Metznik (Westford, Mass.) — 0.2 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 0 K
The Gulls took a quick 1-0 lead in the first after John Fusco (Naples, Fla.) led off with a double and later came in to score on a wild pitch.
In the next half inning, the Vikings evened the score, and the game stood tied at one through two full.
The Gulls reclaimed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third after TJ Liponis (Scarborough, Maine) doubled home AJ Hamm (Shrewsbury, Mass.), but a two-run frame from the Vikings gave them a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth.
They clung to that 3-2 lead until the seventh inning, when Endicott scratched a run across via a Liponis RBI groundout to knot things up at three a side.
After some shutdown relief from Colby Correia (Fairhaven, Mass.), Matt Pappalardo (Pelham, N.H.), and Ben Gill (Sanford, Maine), the Blue and Green headed into the bottom of the eighth with the chance to take control of the matchup.
They did just that, as a five-run frame propelled them past the Vikings. Kyle Grabowski (Westfield, Mass.) delivered the big blow with a bases clearing three-run triple, while Hamm also notched an RBI single in the midst of the rally.
Gill posted a scoreless ninth inning to seal the comeback win for the Gulls.
