Baseball Sweeps No. 3 Johns Hopkins (4-3) and Bowdoin (18-2)
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Endicott baseball team defeated No. 3 nationally ranked Johns Hopkins, 4-3, and then followed up with a dominant 18-2 win over Bowdoin in Monday afternoon's RussMatt Invitational action from Chain of Lakes field three.
GAME ONE: ENDICOTT 4, NO. 3 JOHNS HOPKINS 3
WP (1-0): Colby Correia (Fairhaven, Mass.) — 3.1 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 3 K
LP (1-1): Thomas Cancian (Bloomfield, Conn.) — 5.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 K
SV (2): Kyan Bagshaw (Amherst, N.H.) — 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
After the game was halted due to inclement weather with Endicott leading 1-0 on Sunday, play picked up on Monday morning with Matt Pappalardo (Pelham, N.H.) on the hill.
The Blue Jays evened the score at one in the bottom of the third, and that held until the eighth inning.
In the eighth, Brenden Walsh (Reading, Mass.) stepped to the plate with two runners aboard. On a 2-1 count, he turned on one, and bombed it into the left-center field gap that kept on carrying, and it eventually cleared everything for a three-run blast to put Endicott in front, 4-1.
After the first two Blue Jays reached base in the eighth, Jake Harmony (Fairfield, Conn.) replaced Correia on the mound. Hopkins threatened and eventually scored two runs, but Harmony escaped further damage to keep Endicott's lead intact.
In the bottom of the ninth, Hopkins headed to bat for its final chance to win or force extra innings. Harmony recorded the first two outs, and Bagshaw entered to finish things off.
The southpaw faced just one Blue Jays hitter, fanning him to finalize the hard-fought 4-3 win for the Gulls.
GAME TWO: ENDICOTT 18, BOWDOIN 2
WP (1-0): Max Jarvie (Wilton, Conn.) — 5 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
LP (0-3): Sam Almy (Cumberland, Maine) — 3 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
After a scoreless first, the Gulls posted three runs in the second, two in the third, three in the fifth, nine in the sixth, and one in the seventh to down the Polar Bears, 18-2.
Trevor Kamuda (Groveland, Mass.) nearly hit for the cycle. He went 3-for-4 with a grand slam, double, triple, and six RBI's to lead the Blue and Green in the blowout.
Kyle Grabowski (Westfield, Mass.) also logged a multi-hit day from the three-hole. The third baseman went 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI's.
AJ Hamm (Shrewsbury, Mass.) piled on to the nine run sixth inning with a two-run blast, while Walsh reached safely in all three plate appearances (double, three RBI's, three runs scored).
Adam Regan (Braintree, Mass.) made his first career start at DH and logged a productive 1-for-2 afternoon with two RBI's, a walk, and two runs scored.
On the mound, Jarvie was nearly perfect in his five innings of work. He ended up allowing two runs in the fifth before he was replaced by Jeremy Krendel (Framingham, Mass.) and Michael St. Martin (Walpole, Mass.), who finished off the resounding win with back-to-back perfect innings of relief.
