No. 22 Baseball Outlasts Roger Williams, 2-1
BRISTOL, R.I. — The No. 22 nationally ranked Endicott baseball team defeated Conference of New England (CNE) rival Roger Williams, 2-1, in Tuesday evening's CNE showdown at Paolino Field.
WP (5-1): Ben Gill (Sanford, Maine) — 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
LP (2-1): Daniel McDonnell (Southampton, N.Y.) — 4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
SV (1): Jake Harmony (Fairfield, Conn.) — 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
In a tight pitching duel where runs were scarce, the Gulls struck first in the top of the second. Cade Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.) led off the frame with a single throught the left side, and later came around to score on a wild pitch.
Then, in the bottom of the fifth, the Hawks threatened with the bases loaded and just one out. On a ground ball up the middle that looked sure to be a two-run single, AJ Hamm (Shrewsbury, Mass.) made a sprawling stop and flipped to TJ Liponis (Scarborough, Maine) for the force out at second, limiting the Hawks to just one run on the play. A popout induced by Gill got the Gulls out of the inning without any further damage.
The Gulls quickly reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth. Brenden Walsh (Reading, Mass.) led off with a ringing single to left field, and then stole second.
A deep fly ball to right field off of John Fusco's (Naples, Fla.) bat moved him over to third base with just one out, and then Trevor Kamuda (Groveland, Mass.) put one plenty deep enough out in the air to right to bring Walsh in on a sac fly.
Endicott's lockdown pitching staff did not allow a run the rest of the way, as Jeremy Krendel (Framingham, Mass.) and Harmony combined to close out the final four innings to seal the Blue and Green's ninth straight win.
