COLLEGE WORLD SERIES: No. 9/11 Endicott Downs No. 16/18 Adrian, 12-2
EASTLAKE, Ohio — The No. 9/11 nationally ranked Endicott baseball team cruised past No. 16/18 Adrian, 12-2, in Saturday night's College World Series winner's bracket contest from Classic Park.
WP (4-1): Jeremy Krendel (Framingham, Mass.) — 4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
LP (9-3): Parker Faris (Perrysburg, Ohio) — 3 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 2 K
The Gulls dug themselves an early hole, as the Bulldogs jumped on starter Evan Scully (Maynard, Mass.) for a pair of runs in the second inning.
They threatened for more in the top of the third, but some heads-up defense from James Benestad (Portsmouth, R.I.) and AJ Hamm (Shrewsbury, Mass.) cut down a baserunner to strand men at first and third.
In their third chance against the Bulldogs' starter, the Gulls offense cashed in.
Trevor Kamuda (Groveland, Mass.) jump-started the rally with a single through the left side before Adam Regan (Braintree, Mass.) reached on an error to place men on first and second.
A few batters later, Kyle Grabowski (Westfield, Mass.) singled in Kamuda for the Gulls' first run of the day, cutting the Adrian lead to 2-1.
Then, Cade Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.) changed the total trajectory of the game. On a 2-1 count, he drilled one into the right center field gap to score Regan, evening up the contest.
Brenden Walsh (Reading, Mass.) kept the rally rolling, as he lined one into the left field corner and legged it out for a two-run triple to put the Gulls in front 4-2.
After the Bulldogs finally ended the eventful inning (10 Gulls came to bat), Jeremy Krendel (Framingham, Mass.) posted a quick zero to bring the offense back up for more.
Regan once again reached on an error to lead off the fourth inning, and TJ Liponis (Scarborough, Maine) made that miscue hurt. After fouling off a few pitches to very deep left field, he straightened one out and cleared the left center field fence for a two-run bomb.
A bases loaded 10-pitch walk by Benestad drove in another in that frame, so through four full, the Gulls' lead stood at 7-2.
They kept the foot on the gas pedal with another four runs in the bottom of the fifth (Liponis RBI single, Walsh RBI single, Fusco RBI double), before Regan put the nail in the coffin with a solo shot into left center.
Krendel continued to deal on the hill, totally silencing the Bulldogs' bats. After his 4.1 IP, he turned the ball over to Colby Correia (Fairhaven, Mass.), who induced an inning-ending double play to end another Adrian scoring chance.
In the ninth, Derek Roberts (Wayland, Mass.) navigated through the final few Bulldogs hitters to wrap up the impressive 12-2 win.
