ENDICOTT ICE HOCKEY TEAM WORKING TO ICE CANCER
Sept. 12, 2005
As the Endicott College Ice Hockey team gears up for what is anticipated to be another successful season on the ice, they will also be working to "ice" cancer.
In a program known as "Scoring Against Cancer," this team of 30 players has come together to not only compete against their on-ice opponents, but at the same time they will be battling to conquer the life challenging disease of cancer.
Stemming from the success of a rapidly growing ice hockey program and recognizing the importance of giving back to the community, it soon became apparent that this team is more than just about what happens on the ice. Coach Brian Wylie stated, "This team is comprised of great competitors, great young men who recognize that they are gifted as athletes and blessed with good health at this time in their lives. They also recognize that good health is a gift and it is not to be taken for granted. Cancer has, in one way or another, impacted nearly everyone on our team so it only makes sense that as we work to raise money for our hockey program, local families and the American Cancer Society (ACS) to aid in a much larger community endeavor, combating cancer."
"The effort to "Score Against Cancer," while also raising proceeds for the hockey program, is indicative of this group of players," said Wylie. They never speak about themselves as individuals; rather their commitment is to the team and each other. This year, and for what we hope are many years to come, our team membership will include a few `adopted' young adults in our area who have faced the challenges of cancer. We want to extend to these adolescent cancer survivors companionship, while at the same time offer their family financial assistance. With that, I need help identifying those in need, as well as contributions to make this initiative a success. If you are interested, please contact me as I have a team that is ready to hit the ice and "Score Against Cancer."
