William Paterson outlasts Endicott
Nov. 21, 2005
The Endicott Hockey team traveled to the Garden City of New Jersey for a two game weekend contest against the William Paterson Pioneers and the Montclair State Red Hawks. The Gulls who were trying to continue their 5- game win streak and during that time had outscored their opponents 41 to 8, were given a rude awakening by losing both games 4-3 and 6-3 respectively.
The first game with William Paterson proved to be an eye opener for Endicott who came out in the first period sluggishly allowing William Paterson to dominate much of the play. Endicott goalie Jeff Pardue looked solid early by putting aside many odd-man rushes and point-blank opportunities allowed by Endicott. But it was Mike Manfredi on a power-play goal at 4:31 of the first period that was able to deflect a Mike Ripley shot to get Endicott on the board in the first.
It didn't take long for William Paterson to answer in the second, when Bill Katinsky skated the length of the ice with just 30 seconds off the clock for their second goal of the game. However Endicott did all they could by throwing the puck at every possible opportunity on net, but Joe Vincent was a wall (42 saves) for William Paterson. Endicott had plenty of opportunities and provided much of the pressure, but Vincent was just too strong. The Pioneers pulled away with two more unanswered goals from a John Gomes short-handed goal and a Steve Clentano tally for a 3-1 lead late in the second.
Endicott finally got back on the board with the hard work of senior Adam Partaledis that lead to a great individual effort goal by Chris Garofalo making it 3-2. But it was those twenty minutes of the second period and three goals allowed by Endicott, that would define the entire game.
Endicott came out in the third much more determined than William Paterson and outplayed them for the majority of the third period. Kenny Dargon who played tough throughout the game, got the tying goal from Mike Ripley on a power-play goal and appeared that the Gulls would not be denied. However with 35 seconds left in the game and the face-off to the left of Pardue, Endicott allowed an untouched Ian Vonglahn to collect the face off and rattle home a back-breaking goal giving them the 4-3 victory.
