Crew Battles the Nations Best at Dad Vail Regatta
May 14, 2012
Philadelphia, Pa. - The brought it's women's varsity four, men's varsity four, women's frosh/novice four, and men's frosh/novice four to the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia to take on crews from all over the United States (and a few from Canada).
Up first for Endicott, the men's varsity four (c: Mike Fortin, 4: Nate Simeon, 3: Clayton Morrissey, 2: Charles Nastasi, 1: Alston Adkins) drew a tough heat versus the Michigan, Delaware, Franklin and Marshall, Lafayette, and Oklahoma City. Needing to finish in the top two to advance to the semi-finals, the Gulls crossed the line in fifth place with the 48th best time of the 54 crews entered.
In one of the more eventful races of the day, Endicott's previously undefeated women's varsity four (c: Kaitlyn Walker, 4: Joy Harriman, 3: Andrea Ford, 2: Emily Heath, 1: Courtney Russell) raced in the division II/division III event. Endicott drew the fastest heat of the event, competing against Nova Southeastern, Philadelphia, Seattle Pacific, and St. Thomas. 500m into the race, the Endicott ladies sat in 2nd place between Nova Southeastern and Philadelphia when a near collision caused them to stop completely, costing them the opportunity to advance. Despite having to battle back from the back of the pack, the Gulls crossed the line in 4th with the 13th best quarter-final time of the 24 crews in the entire event. After winning their semi-final heats, Nova and Philadelphia placed first and third place in the championship final, leaving Endicott to wonder what could have been.
The men's frosh/novice four (c: Mariah Scanlon, 4: Dan Richard, 3: Ian Kaeding, 2: Scott Moore, 1: Kevin Duffy) struggled to find their form in a heat against Tennessee, Bowdoin, Case Western Reserve, and Lafayette. After jumping out to the lead in the first 300m of the race, the crew dropped back to fifth. However, the coaches and rowers were very impressed with the guys gained a lot of motiviation and drive from the experience.
In Endicott's last race of the day, the women's frosh/novice four (c: Maria Battista, 4: Anne Ahrens, 3: Rachel Mueller, 2: Marina Phillips, 1: Kathryn A'Hearn) raced in a heat against Fordham, Dayton, Rochester, Purdue, and Old Dominion. Despite being out sized by the competition, the lady Gulls showed great finesse and technique to finish third, defeating NCAA division I Old Dominion, perennial powerhouse Purdue, and NCAA division III Rochester. The freshman ladies third place finish missed the semi-finals by one spot and their time placed 35 of 54 crews in the quarter-final heats; however, Coach Chorney received several compliments form other coaches about the strong technique the crew showed.
Endicott will greatly miss graduating seniors Emily Heath and Kaitlyn Walker next season. Both Emily and Kaitlyn were two of the first athletes to join the team when it refounded in 2008 and their commitment, leadership and skill will be missed. The rest of the team will be working hard this summer to improve their fitness and technique, in hopes of having an even stronger 2012-2013 season.
