Success is sweet at NH Championships for Gulls crew team
October 18, 2011
The 2011-12 Endicott crew team took a giant step forward compared to a disasterous day one year ago at the NH Championships Regatta. The women's 1st varsity 4+ (C: Katie Cody, 4: Annie Ahrens, 3: Hannah Cushman, 2: Joy Harriman, 1: Haley Russo) highlighted the day by finishing with the 4th fastest overall time in a 13 boat field, having the 2nd fastest time among collegiate crews in the event. The men's 1st varsity 4+ finished 6th of 11 boats in their field and was the 3rd fastest American collegiate crew. All the top Endicott crews were 1st among New England Collegiate Rowing League (NECRL) schools competing in their events.
In additon to the women's 1st varsity 4+'s solid race, Endicott showed significant depth. The women's 2nd varsity 4+ (C: Maria Battista, 4: Meaghan Moran, 3: Emily Heath, 2: Jenn Thomas, 1: Andrea Ford) finished just 16 seconds behind the 1st varsity 4+ in 7th place, topping all 'B' entries in the event. The 3rd varsity 4+ (C: Mike Herman, 4: Casey Foote, 3: Amanda Bedding, 2: Deanna Weeks, 1: Kendra Ellsworth) showed significant promise, despite a lineup shuffle just prior to racing, which forced an inexperienced novice bow pair to compete in a varsity event for the first time.
Not to be outdone by the varsity crews, the women's novice crew (C: Mariah Scanlon, 4: Mariah Battista, 3: Shelby Webster, 2: Rachel Mueller, 1: Marina Phillips) finished 4th in the women's open novice 4+ event. The coaches believe that as the year progresses, the women's novice 4+ will be exceedingly successful.
The men's novice 4+ (C: Mariah Scanlon, 4: Ghaith Hamza, 3: Dan Richards, 2: Ian Kaeding, 1: Nick Landry) brought back bronze medals to Beverly with their 3rd place finish, just 16 seconds out of the gold. The bow 3 rowers from the mens' novice 4+ teamed with Mike Herman as the Endicott men's second varsity 4+, which brought up the rear in their event, as the crew was clearly gassed from their first go around.
All in all, it was a great day of racing. The team would like to thank all the family members who came up to watch the team race. Full race results and times can be found at https://www.regattacentral.com/regatta/results/1926_4171.pdf. Up next, the 1st Varsity Crews will race the famed Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, while the whole team's next competition will be the NECRL Halloween Regatta the first weekend in November.
