Phil Konopka named NEFC Offensive Player of the Week
October 2, 2011
BEVERLY, Mass. - Phil Konopka (Shelton, Conn.) shattered his own Endicott football records for passing yards and passing touchdowns in a single game as the Gulls defeated Curry 55-7 on the road. He amassed 385 yards and five touchdown passes, did not throw an interception, and continues to lead Endicott to their best start in program history.
For his efforts, Konopka was named Offensive Player of the Week by the NEFC. The Gulls (5-0, 2-0 NEFC Boyd) are the \#1 ranked team in New England.
The senior captain completed touchdown passes of 41, 59, 2, 55, and 10 yards in that order. Konopka’s 55-yard strike to junior wide receiver Mike Murphy (Chelmsford, Mass.), who totaled 202 receiving yards himself, broke the school record for passing yards in a game. His first three touchdown passes were part of a 28-0 first quarter start for the Gulls. The previous record was four touchdown passes, set only two weeks ago by Konopka himself against Fitchburg State.
His previous record for passing yards in a single game was 297 against this same Curry team one year ago in a 28-24 fourth quarter comeback for the Gulls. In Saturday’s game against the Colonels, Konopka threw for 350 yards in the first half alone on 13-of-16 pass completions with four touchdowns. His longest strike of the day was a 66-yard completion to Murphy down to the Curry 3-yard line which set up junior running back Mike Wheeler (Hanover, Mass.) for the rushing touchdown to put Endicott up 28-0.
Konopka continues to be the top-ranked quarterback in the NEFC, leading the conference in passing yards per game (243.8), touchdown passes (15), passing yards (1219), total offensive yards per game (237.8), and pass efficiency (181.5).
Endicott will travel to Nichols next Saturday to face a team against he which threw for 155 yards and three touchdowns on 11-of-15 pass completions last year while earning NEFC Offensive Player of the Week honors.
