Four Gulls score to beat Plymouth State
Sept. 6, 2008
BEVERLY, Mass. - A balanced scoring attack led by sophomore Lindsey Mills (Arlington, Mass.) helped lead the Endicott College Gulls to victory over the visiting Plymouth State Panthers in non-conference action on Saturday. The win moves the Gulls to 3-1 on the season while dropping the visitors to 0-1 in their first game of the year.
The Blue and Green faced a challenge from the start as junior Sammy Romano (Kingston, N.H.) scored the first goal of the season for Plymouth State a mere 28-seconds into the contest from a pass off the stick of senior Ashley Gutowski (Conway, N.H.). Endicott would bounce back to score the next two goals of the game, one from freshman Anna Giannoni (Granby, Conn.) and the other from sophomore Joanne Reid (Clarksville, Md.), already her fifth goal of the young season. Plymouth State, however, would be able to answer just seconds before the end of the half as Gutowski drove a ball from the edge of the circle past goalie Chelsea DeFeo (York, Maine) with just two ticks left in the first.
The second half was all Gulls as they were able to put eight shots on the board. Lindsey Mills played a great second frame as she was able to assist on the go-ahead goal by senior Jennifer Beech (Devonshire, Bermuda), breaking the 2-2 tie. Mills was then able to score off of a corner as Beech returned the favor and assisted on Mills' third goal of the season. Mills had two assists and one goal to help lead the Gulls to a hard-fought victory.
Goalie Chelsea DeFeo picked up her third win of the season to move to 3-1, while Plymouth State goalkeeper Elyse Sedgley (Hopkinton, N.H.) fell to 0-1. DeFeo was able to make four saves while her counterpart, Sedgley, had nine in the losing effort.
The Gulls board the bus to travel to the University of Maine at Farmington to take on the Beavers in non-conference action on Wednesday. Plymouth State looks again for its first win of the young season when it travels to Windham, N.H. to take on Castleton on Wednesday afternoon.
