Box Score
BEVERLY, Mass. – A pair of freshmen scored all three goals for the Endicott College field hockey team as the Gulls defeated UMass-Dartmouth, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon in Beverly, Mass. Hannah Thornberg (Oakland, Maine) scored twice for the Gulls (3-1, 1-0 TCCC) while Taylor Matties (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) added her first collegiate goal to down the Corsairs (2-3, 0-1 LEC).
The Gulls got on the board quickly as Thornberg netted her first goal of the contest less than a minute into the game giving Endicott an early 1-0 lead on a pass from TCCC Offensive Player of the Week Joanne Reid (Clarksville, Md.). Megan McBride (Saugus, Mass.) made a nifty through pass to Thornberg later in the half which she flipped past the goalie for her second of the contest and an Endicott 2-0 lead. UMass-Dartmouth’s Stephanie Kinchla (Falmouth, Mass.) cut the deficit to 2-1 on a pass from Linee Mello-Frost (New Bedford, Mass.) before the 12-minute mark of the period.
Both teams would go scoreless until 10-minutes into the second half when Anna Giannoni (Granby, Conn.) picked up her first career assist as she found Taylor Matties on a fast-break chance that gave the Gulls an insurance goal and a 3-1 lead. The Corsairs would not go quietly as Kinchla scored her second goal of the game with less than three minutes to play to knife into the lead, 3-2. Trailing by a goal, UMass-Dartmouth stayed on the attack until the closing seconds, however the Gulls held them at bay, sealing their third-straight victory, 3-2.
Taylor Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.) picked up her third win of the season while making 13 saves on 22 shots and allowing only the two goals. Seana Golden (Somerset, Mass.) drops to 2-3 this year despite making four stops.
The Blue and Green return to action on Thursday when they travel to Bridgewater State College for a non-conference matchup at 4:00 p.m. UMass-Dartmouth will try and get back into the win column when they travel to Plymouth State for a 4:00 p.m. face off.
