SALEM, Mass. – For the second consecutive game the Endicott College field hockey team was defeated in the closing minutes of the game as Salem State College downed the Gulls, 3-2, in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon. The Gulls have dropped their third-straight decision by one-goal to drop to 3-4 overall. Salem State improves to 4-1 this season with the win as sophomore Nicole Roy (Melrose, Mass.) scored the game- winning goal with under two minutes to play in regulation.
Junior Joanne Reid (Clarksville, Md.) opened the scoring in the first half for the Gulls with her team-leading fourth goal of the season on an assist from Lauren Atkinson (Southbury, Conn.) at 17:09. The Lady Vikings answered with their own goal scored by junior April Rossetti (Saugus, Mass.) on an assist from junior Karen Atkinson (Reading, Mass.) at 23:00 tying the game at 1-1.
Endicott’s Anna Giannoni (Granby, Conn.) scored at 27:37 in the second half assisted by freshman Hannah Thornberg (Oakland, Maine). Salem State bounced back with a timely unassisted goal from junior Katie LaPrad (Spencer, Mass.) making the game 2-2.
With time running out, Salem State’s Roy scored her first goal of the season on an assist from LaPrad at 68:19 in the second half to drop the Gulls to their third straight setback.
Endicott’s Taylor Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.) drops to 3-4 this season despite making eight saves in the contest. Jessica McKenna (Rowley, Mass.) got her fourth win on the season for Salem State while making a pair of saves.
The Blue and Green return to action on Saturday when the Gulls travel to the University of New England for a The Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup at 11:00 a.m. Salem State will travel to Fitchburg State for a MASCAC matchup on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
