No. 23 Field Hockey Takes Down Southern Maine, 4-1
GORHAM, Maine — The No. 23 Endicott field hockey team defeated Southern Maine, 4-1, in non-conference action on Wednesday night from Hannaford Field.
Maddy Dengler (Winchester, Mass.) got the scoring started just over five minutes into the contest as the Gulls showed how dangerous they can be in transition with Tori Swanson (Farmington, Conn.) finding Dengler on the back post for the opening goal. After a Southern Maine foul on the Endicott half of the field, two passes later gave Swanson the opportunity to run past her defender and get into the circle to set up Dengler's sixth goal of the season.
In the third quarter, Reagan Hicks (Barnstable, Mass.) doubled up the Endicott lead 62 seconds in with a penalty stroke conversion and then Elena Govoni (Walpole, Mass.) redircted a pass from Abby Antonelli (Worcester, Mass.) off a penalty corner to give the Gulls a 3-0 lead.
Southern Maine didn't go down without a fight as they broke the Endicott shutout streak with less than a minute left in the third quarter and cut the deficit to two heading to the fourth quarter.
Over the course of the final 15 minutes, with the host Huskies pushing for a second goal, the Gulls defense allowed just one shot all quarter thwarting any opportunity of a comeback. On the other end with about six minutes remaining, Hicks was able to get past several Southern Maine defenders and found Natalia Arjona (Ashland, Mass.) near the endline, who fed the ball into the middle of the circle and Swanson was able to collect the pass and score her seventh goal of the season.
In goal, Faith Minickene (Madison, Conn.) improved her record to 6-1 this season as she made seven saves.
