Whitelaw named TCCC Honorable Mention

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Endicott's Graham Whitelaw (Kennebunk, Maine) was the lone Gull to receive All-Conference recognition as the junior guard was named to The Commonwealth Coast Conference men's basketball Honorable Mention team, as announced by Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye on Monday. Voting for the All-TCCC team and each of the major award winners was conducted among the Conference's head men's basketball coaches.
A total of 11 different institutions from The Commonwealth Coast Conference were represented on the 2008-09 All-TCCC Men's Basketball Team and the list of major individual award winners. Wentworth Institute of Technology senior Todd Doyle was named TCCC Player of the Year, University of New England senior Jaykyri Simpson was chosen as TCCC Defensive Player of the Year, UNE freshman Quentin Thompson was named TCCC Rookie of the Year, Wentworth senior Brad Bryant was honored as TCCC Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year, UNE's Jason Mulligan was named TCCC Coach of the Year, and Eastern Nazarene College captured the Team Sportsmanship Award.
Endicott's Graham Whitelaw earned Honorable Mention honors after averaging 15.6 points per game this season. The junior shot 42.9% from the field and hit a team-high 56 three-pointers in 2008-09. Whitelaw ranked first on the team in minutes played (805) and free-throw percentage (79.7%), and second in steals with 36. Whitelaw had two games this year where he scored at least 30 points, accomplishing the feat against Colby College on November 25th where he shot 11-of-18 and ended the game with 30. He then scored 32 points in an 82-62 win over Nichols College on January 13th.
The All-TCCC First Team is highlighted by Player of the Year Todd Doyle and Defensive Player of the Year Jaykyri Simpson. Joining Doyle and Simpson on the first team were Johnnie Jefferson (Univ. of New England), Aaron Trigg (Gordon) and Justin Woodworth (Salve Regina).
Second team selections included Matt Abbott (Wentworth), Brady Bajema (Gordon), Jon Chaloux (Colby-Sawyer), Derrick Neal (Regis) and Duncan Szeliga (Colby-Sawyer).
Along with Whitelaw, other honorable mention selections were Billy Barrett (Roger Williams), Patrick Flanagan (Roger Williams), Kyle Fredette (Western New England), Windell Hinkson (Salve Regina), and Quashed Simmons (Curry).
Doyle, a senior guard from Mystic, Conn., enters the upcoming TCCC Tournament as the league's only player to average more than 20 points per game in conference-only play. In addition to leading the conference with 20.8 points per game in TCCC play, Doyle also leads the league with a .932 free-throw percentage in all games played (96-for-103), which ranks fourth among all NCAA Division III players. Wentworth's leader on the court, Doyle not only tops all Leopards in scoring, but has recorded a team-best 29 steals and ranks second on the team with 60 assists.
Simpson, a senior from East Cleburne, Texas, played a major role in helping lead UNE (21-4 overall, 12-1 TCCC) to the top seed in the upcoming TCCC Tournament. In addition to ranking in the TCCC Top-25 in conference-only scoring with 11.8 points per game, Simpson played a key role on defense in TCCC play, ranking second with 2.77 steals per game and also pulling down 5.6 rebounds per game from his backcourt position.
Thompson, a freshman guard from Austin, Texas, has been a pleasant addition to a potent UNE squad. He ranks third in scoring for the Nor'easters, averaging 11.4 points per game. Among UNE players, Thompson also ranks second with 50 steals and third with 52 assists.
Bryant, a senior guard from Livermore, Maine, carries an impressive 3.9 grade point average in engineering technology. A dean's list honoree each semester he has been enrolled at Wentworth, Bryant was awarded to the 2008 NABC Honors Court and is also a member of Tau Alpha Phi, a national engineering honors society. Bryant has started 22 games this season and has tallied a team-high 64 assists.
In his second season at UNE, Mulligan has piloted the Nor'easters to a 21-4 record, including a 12-1 mark in conference play, the best season in program history. UNE, ranked ninth in the most recent NCAA Division III northeast region poll, has won 20 of their last 21 contests, including a 19-game winning streak at one point. The Nor'easters will be the number one seed in the upcoming TCCC Championship.
