Ithaca downs Endicott, 78-69

AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College’s LeFrak Gymnasium was the site for this evening’s men’s basketball matchup between Ithaca College and Endicott College in game two of the Ken Wright ’52 Memorial Invitational Tournament. Ithaca earned a 78-69 victory to improve to 2-0 on the season, while Endicott falls to 1-2 with the loss.
In the first five minutes of play, Endicott head coach Phil Rowe was forced to call a pair of timeouts as the Bombers knocked down six of their first eight shots to jump out to a 17-4 lead. At the second stoppage, Rowe put in five new players who responded with five straight points, however Ithaca answered with a 7-0 run of its own, opening up a 24-9 lead.
Just after the mid-point of the first half, Endicott scored six straight points on a \#Matt Bibeau\# (Wilmington, Mass.) free throw, a triple by \#Graham Whitelaw\# (Kennebunk, Maine) and a lay-up by \#Erik Callo\# (Southington, Conn.). The run cut Ithaca’s lead to 24-16, and forced the Bombers to call a timeout.
After a step-back jumper by Ithaca’s Jordan Marcus, \#Danquah Rawlins\# (Mattapan, Mass.) nailed a smooth three from the top of the key late in the shot clock for Endicott. With 6:10 to play, Endicott’s \#Bobby Montrond\# (Brockton, Mass.) finished off a slashing drive to cut the Ithaca lead to 26-23.
In the final minutes of the first half, Ithaca stretched its lead back out to 34-28 before the halftime buzzer went off. At the break, Marcus led all scorers with 10 points for the Bombers, while teammate Phil Barera and Endicott’s Rawlins each had eight points.
Ithaca’s lead would hover between three and 13 points in the second half, as the Gulls were never able to take the lead. With 4:13 remaining in regulation and Endicott making a comeback, Barera came up with a huge play for the Bombers when he pulled down an offensive rebound off a missed three-pointer, went right back up with the ball and drew a foul while knocking down his shot, Barera completing the three-point play to give his team a 69-59 lead.
Marcus and Barera each had 20 points for the Bombers, but it was Endicott’s Rawlins who led all scorers with 21, adding a team-high nine rebounds. Barera pulled down 11 rebounds for the game’s lone double-double, as he was 9-for-10 from the floor. Ithaca took 34 shots from beyond the arc, connecting on nine of them (26.5%). Callo added 14 points and eight boards for the Gulls.
With the win, the Bombers will take on Amherst Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in the tournament’s championship game. The Gulls will face University of Maine-Farmington in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m.
