BEVERLY, Mass. – A seven-point Eastern Connecticut State University halftime lead proved sufficient, as the Warriors held on to defeat Endicott, 78-74, in a non-conference matchup played on Tuesday evening in Beverly, Mass. Eastern Conn. got a season-high 28 points from senior Edwin Ortiz (Hartford, Conn.), who hit eight 3-pointers on the night. The Warriors improve to 6-1 on the season while Endicott dips to 3-4.
Eastern Connecticut stormed into the intermission on the strength of a 6-0 run which included back-to-back buckets from Chris Robitaille (Canton, Conn.) and a buzzer-beating layup from Jamie Kohn (Columbia, Conn.), sending the Warriors into the break with a 35-28 advantage.
It took just three minutes into the second half for the Gulls to cut the deficit down to one, as \#Matt Bibeau\# (Wilmington, Mass.) earned two points down low to make it 39-38 in favor of the guests. The Warriors responded with a 10-0 run that included three-straight 3-balls from Edwin Ortiz to regain control for ECSU, 49-38.
Endicott was able to hang close at the midpoint of the frame after \#Danquah Rawlins\# (Mattapan, Mass.) scored six straight points for the Gulls, pulling the hosts back within five. Eastern, however, was too strong down the stretch as the Warriors were able to push their lead to 12 after yet another Ortiz trey. The Gulls, who trailed by 11 with 36-seconds remaining, ended the game on an 8-1 run. Junior guard \#Mike Rhodes\# (Amston, Conn.) nailed a 3-pointer with one-second remaining to end the game, 78-74.
Tuesday’s box score was virtually identical for each side. Eastern Connecticut shot 28-of-67 (41.8%) while Endicott shot 27-of-66 (40.9%). Each team hit eight 3-pointers and finished with 42 rebounds (14 offensive and 28 defensive, respectfully). Both the Warriors and Gulls scored 30 points in the paint and finished with matching 14 second-chance points. The two teams each had eight points apiece on the fast break.
Edwin Ortiz led all scorers with a season-high 28 points. Courtney Simmons (Middletown, Conn.) had 13 points while Chris Robitaille had 10 points and five rebounds. Bill Roveto (South Windsor, Conn.) grabbed a game-high 11 boards while sophomore Nick Nedwick (Irvington, N.Y.) dished out a game-leading eight assists.
Endicott was paced by \#Danquah Rawlins\# and \#Mike Rhodes\# 17 points and five assists apiece. \#Erik Callo\# (Southington, Conn.) notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. \#Aaron Karkow\# (Uncasville, Conn.) also chipped in eight points.
Endicott returns to action on Thursday when the Gulls travel to Waterville, Maine to square-off with the Mules of Colby College. Eastern Connecticut travels to Plymouth State on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
