Endicott falters on the road to Bowdoin; Gulls fall 13-12

Brunswick, Maine – Needing a goal over the final 2:29 of the fourth quarter to force overtime, the Endicott men’s lacrosse team was unable to score the equalizer, falling to NESCAC foe Bowdoin in non-conference action.
Endicott dropped to 10-3 (7-0 TCCC) on the season while Bowdoin improved to 4-6 (1-6 NESCAC).
After twelve and a half scoreless minutes in the fourth quarter, Gulls midfielder Chris Cotter (Lordship, Conn.) pulled Endicott to within one goal with 2:29 remaining in the game. Junior Connor Prescott (Norwalk, Conn.) assisted on the play, his lone point of the contest.
After the Endicott defense forced a Polar Bears turnover following the faceoff, senior Kevin Downes (Cheshire, Conn.) fire a shot on goalie Jake McCampbell (Medfield, Mass.) but McCampbell recorded his 15th save of the game halt the Endicott attack.
The teams exchanged turnovers and with possession, the Gulls called timeout with only 27 ticks left on the clock with a man-up opportunity. Endicott, however, turned the ball right back over to the Polar Bears without getting a shot off to end the game.
Endicott opened up the first quarter with three unanswered goals, including one right after the opening faceoff by junior Sam Ozycz (Cheshire, Conn.) who took the groundball and raced into the Bowdoin zone to score the game’s opening goal. Ozycz won the next faceoff and relayed the ball to attacker Connor McCormack (Norwalk, Conn.) who found the back of the net on an unassisted goal 17 seconds later to put Endicott up 2-0. A minute and a half after that, Kyle Jordan (Falmouth, Maine) scored the first of his four goals to give the Gulls a commanding 3-0 lead to start the game.
Bowdoin, however, responded quickly with four straight goals of their own turn the early game momentum. Ben Chadwick (Needham, Mass.) put the Polar Bears on the board with an unassisted goal with 11:13 to go in the first followed by tallies by Patrick Lawlor (Hanover, Mass.) and Keegan Mehlhorn (North Berwick, Maine) to tie the game at 3-3. Chadwick netted his second of the quarter to give Bowdoin a 4-3 advantage.
The Gulls scored the final goal of the first quarter as junior Jack Curtis (Chelmsford, Mass.) beat the goalie with an assist to Jon Thanas (Cumberland, R.I.), evening the score 4-4 going into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, the Polar Bears edged the Gulls 4-3 to take a 8-7 lead going into halftime. Lawlor added another goal, but Bowdoin saw senior Owen Smith (Brunswick, Maine) score twice to lead the offense. Endicott got goals from Jordan, McCormack, and junior Brian Vincent (Norwalk, Conn.) to stay in the game.
The Blue and Green were able to tie the game on two different occasions in the third quarter with game-tying goals by Cotter and Jordan but Bowdoin netted three of the last four goals to take a two-goal lead into the final quarter. Mehlhorn scored three goals in the quarter, pushing his game total to four while Smith scored Bowdoin’s 13th and final goal which would be the game-winner.

Goalie Mike Klein (Darien, Conn.) made eight saves in the game, but dropped his season record to 8-2.
Endicott returns to their TCCC schedule on Saturday, April 16th for a road game against Gordon College starting at 5:00 pm. The Gulls suffered a 7-5 loss to the Fighting Scots in their only meeting of the 2010 season.
