Sept. 25, 2008
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The Endicott College Gulls lost in the final minutes of their non-conference match against UMass-Dartmouth on Thursday, 1-0. The loss moves the Gulls to 2-5-1 (2-1-1 TCCC) while the win moves the Corsairs to 5-3 (1-0 LEC).
Head Coach Henry Almeida of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team said that he was relieved to see a shot by junior forward Sebastian Cordoba (Marlborough, Mass.) hit the back of the net in the 86th minute of their non-conference match against visiting Endicott at Cressy Field Thursday evening.
Cordoba's goal broke a scoreless tie and gave the Corsairs a 1-0 victory over the Gulls. Cordoba took a pass from junior midfielder Jarred Goldstein (Weymouth, Mass.) and fired a shot past goalkeeper Scott Emmens from 15 yards out.
Each team came close in the first half. Cordoba's header glanced off the goal post to the left of starting EC goalkeeper Jack DeJesus (Swampscott, Mass.) in the 35th minute, and a free kick by the Gulls' Christopher Serpa (Bristol, R.I.) hit the crossbar with 11:59 left in the first half.
"It was a great match," said Almeida. "We came out hard, and both teams played well. We maintained possession and had a lot of opportunities, but that's the story of our season. Sebastian's goal was well-earned. (Freshman forward) Bruno Araguo (Marlborough, Mass.) did a great job for a freshman. He came in and gave us a lift."
The Corsairs out shot Endicott, 20-6. Freshman goalkeeper Anel Brkic (Milton, Mass.) made two saves for UMass Dartmouth, while DeJesus and Scott Emmens (Wethersfield, Conn.) combined for six for the Gulls.
The Blue and Green return to action on Saturday when they travel to Boston, Mass. to take on Wentworth in TCCC action at 3:00 p.m. UMass-Dartmouth will continue their schedule at home when they take on Rhode Island College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
