Men's soccer chosen to finish ninth in 2010
August 24, 2010
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Endicott men’s soccer team has been chosen to finish ninth in the 2010 TCCC standings, it was announced today by Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye. Voting for the preseason poll was conducted among the league’s head men’s soccer coaches.
The Gulls received 97 points in the preseason poll, narrowly trailing Curry (100 points) and the University of New England (103 points).
Three-time defending champion Western New England College was selected as the favorite to win the conference crown after receiving 193 points and 11 of the 14 first-place votes. Roger Williams received three first-place votes for 184 points while Salve Regina earned 160 points to place second and third, respectively.
With a young roster comprised mostly of sophomores and freshman, the 2010 men’s soccer team is eager to further the progress of a program that has increased its win total in each of the past two seasons. Ten returning juniors and seniors, led by captains \#Chris Serpa\# (Bristol, R.I.) and \#Bryan Lee\# (Rockport, Mass.), will look to improve upon last season’s 7-10 record and return to the TCCC playoffs for the first time since 2006.
Five seniors will be on the roster in 2010 to provide leadership for the large underclassmen representation on the squad. Seniors \#Bryan Lee\# and \#Joe Ryan\# (Peabody, Mass.) were every day starters last year. Lee earned Honorable Mention All-TCCC accolades while Ryan played in all 17 matches as a defender. Classmates \#Adam Skerpan\# (Smithfield, R.I.), \#Julio Lopez\# (Laromam, Dominican Republic), and \#Gregory Wilson\# (York, Maine) all provided depth off the bench in 2009.
The Gulls welcome back sophomore \#Kevin Ivester\# (Topsfield, Mass.) who was the team’s second-leading goal-scorer with four markers. Ivester, a TCCC Offensive Player of the Week winner, scored a game-winning goal in the 80th minute in a thrilling 2-1 victory over TCCC foe Curry College on October 17th. He ended the season with four goals, an assist, and nine total points for an Endicott team that finished just outside of the conference playoffs for the third straight year.
Other returning sophomores include goalkeeper \#Daniel Higgins\# (Kingstown, R.I.) who started all 17 matches and had a 1.53 goals against average on the season. Of his seven wins from 2009, four of those were shutouts against Regis, Nichols, Eastern Nazarene, and eventual TCCC champions Western New England College. He compiled 56 saves between the posts. Fellow sophomores \#Kevin Gnecco\# (North Hampton, N.H.) and Chris Serpa will return to play in front of Higgins as crucial parts of the Gulls backfield.
Other goal-scoring options in the sophomore class include midfielder \#Craig Jameson\# (Bedford, N.H.) and striker \#Robbie DiTommaso\# (Farmington, Conn.) who both saw significant playing time last season. Jameson netted a goal and had two assists while DiTommaso scored twice and tallied an assist in his freshman season.
Head Coach Darren Murray once again brought in a large freshman recruiting class to round out his roster. Nine freshmen will join the Endicott community and hope to make an immediate impact on a Gulls squad that is ready to climb the conference standings.
Looking ahead to the fall schedule, Coach Murray has challenged his team with a non-conference schedule against opponents that have frequently reached the NCAA Tournament. Endicott’s home opener on September 2 is against 2009 MASCAC Champions Salem State College who reached the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The very next game for the Gulls will be on the road on September 6 against a Bridgewater State College squad that has reached the NCAA Tournament two out of the past five seasons.
Once TCCC play begins, the schedule does not get any easier with games against 2009 conference winners Western New England College on September 18. The Golden Bears will look to exact some revenge on the Gulls defeated after losing 1-0 in double overtime to Endicott last season. Endicott will close out their 2009 season with three home matches against conference foes Roger Williams University, Salve Regina University, and New England College at the end of October.
