First half goal not enough as Gulls falls to UNE
September 21, 2010
Beverly, Mass. - Despite a 1-0 halftime lead, the Endicott men’s soccer team fell to visiting University of New England, 2-1, on Tuesday night at Endicott Stadium. The Gulls remain winless at 0-5-1 and 0-3 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference play while the Nor’easters improve to 3-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play.
\#Craig Jameson\# (Bedford, N.H.) opened the scoring midway through the first stanza after a nice feed from the top of the box. The equalizer came just over one minute into the second half before the Nor’easters buried the game winner with 15 minutes to play.
Jameson’s early strike was assisted by \#Ryan Coates\# (Wethersfield, Conn.). Coates beat a defender and sent a through ball in the direction of the sophomore midfielder. Jameson drove home a low shot to give the Blue and Green an early advantage.
The Gulls controlled most of the play in the first half, firing 12 shots and earning a pair of corner kicks, but were not able to capitalize.
New England’s Ethan Wells (Franconia, N.H.) made them pay in the opening moments of the second half. The sophomore midfielder intercepted a back pass near the top of the box and fired a well-placed ball into the top corner.
Three minutes later, \#Kevin Ivester\# (Topsfield, Mass.) nearly put the hosts back on top with a well struck volley from the left wing. The shot narrowly sailed over the crossbar.
With just over 15 minutes remaining, the visitors would put the final tally on the board. Jason Marks (East Lyme, Conn.) came forward from a defensive-midfield position on a counter attack and played a pass to the top of the box. Dan Crear (North Attleboro, Mass.) turned on the ball quickly and placed a shot over the head of Endicott keeper \#Daniel Higgins\# (Kingstown, R.I.), who had no chance at the save.
Crear’s first of the season would prove to be the decisive goal in a back-and-forth conference matchup.
Despite the result, Endicott held an advantage in shots (18-6) and corner kicks (4-1). Higgins recorded a pair of saves in net for the Gulls, while Jon Planer (Yarmouth, Maine) registered five saves in between the pipes for the Nor’easters.
The Gulls take a day off before traveling to Springfield, Massachusetts to take on the Pride at 7:00 pm. New England hosts TCCC-foe Gordon College on Saturday at 5:00 pm.
