Gulls Notch 2-1 Victory Over Montclair State

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott men's soccer team battled to a 2-1 victory against Montclair State University in the closing match of the North Shore Invitational on Sunday afternoon.

The Gulls opened the scoring in the fifteenth minute on a goal from Jesse Martinez (Walpole, Mass.). The sophomore midfielder collected the ball during a scramble in front of the net and then shot into the lower left corner to give Endicott the 1-0 lead.

Montclair State came out of halftime flying to knot the game up at 1-1 just over two minutes into the second frame on a tally from Mike Taranto (Wyckoff, N.J.).

Both teams continued to fight hard for the go ahead goal, but the Gulls' Dario Neukom (Palma de Mallorca, Spain) delivered the eventual game winner in the 83rd minute of play. Evan Couchot (Mason, Ohio) sent the ball in from the left goal line, past the goalie, to the waiting foot of Neukom.    

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

• Endicott freshman goaltender Will Manuel (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) improved to 1-0-1 on the season and made one save during the contest
• The Gulls outshot the Red Hawks 18-12.
• Also earning an assist on the game-winning game was Conner Couchot (Mason, Ohio).
• Evan Couchot paced the offense with seven shots, while Neukom was close behind with five.

FOR THE FOES

• Montclair State goalie, Mike Saalfrank (Ramsey, N.J.) recorded three saves during the game.
• The Red Hawks were led offensively by Matt Neto (Kearny, N.J.) who had four shots.

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott (1-0-1) returns to action on Thursday, September 7 when the Gulls host Thomas College for a 7 p.m. matchup. Montclair State (1-1-0) travels to Hunter College for a 5 p.m. kickoff on Wednesday, September 6.
