BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott men's
tennis team fought hard to win two out of three doubles matches in
a CCC showdown with Roger Williams at home, but the Hawks responded
by claiming victories in four of six singles matches to beat the
Gulls 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.
Endicott (5-8, 1-2 CCC) nearly went up 3-0 after doubles action
but in the top flight between Gulls duo Olivier
Joggi (Stoneham, Mass.)/Jake
Cohen (Barrington, R.I.) and Jason
Pacino (North Reading, Mass.)/Ryan Swanson (West
Newbury, Mass.) from Roger Williams, the Hawks battled to
win a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-3).
The Endicott two and three doubles combinations put the home team
ahead 2-1 heading into singles play. Junior Benjamin
Randlett (Middlebury, Vt.) and freshman Eric
Gandrup (Sudbury, Mass.) won 8-5 at the #2 spot while
senior Porter
Williams (Raleigh, N.C.) and freshman
Mike Lauretano (Winchester, Mass.) cruised to an
8-1 win at the third position.
In singles play, the Hawks earned wins at the two, three, five and
six flights while taking tough losses that included first set
tiebreakers in the one and four matches. Joggi and Cohen each
had to win tiebreakers in their first sets before finishing off
their Roger Williams opponents to earn points.
Roger Wiliams (4-5, 1-1 CCC) saw #2 player Zach Bussiere
(Colchester, Conn.), #3 Ryan Swanson, #5 Taylor
Webster (Bristol, Conn.) and #6 Jonathan Chandler
(East Falmouth, Maine) all win in straight sets over
Endicott.
Endicott visits Gordon on Saturday, April 7th for a
noon match with the Scots while Roger Williams travels to Western
New England on Friday afternoon for a 3:30 pm conference
match.
