Feb. 6, 2004
In just 1 hour and 5 minutes, Endicott defeated Newbury 3-0 (30-15, 30-19, 30-18) to improve to 5-6 overall and 5-1 in NECVA New England play. The top point man for the Gulls was once again Jeremy Fontaine with 17 points (13k - 1a - 4b). Both of Endicott's freshmen were right on his heels with Eddie Marchand knocking down 10 kills and George Chapell set a new collegiate best with 9 kills.
The Gulls played a solid match all around tonight and all nine healthy players saw some action. A terrific defensive effort in the first game set the tempo as the team posted 4.5 of their 7.5 blocks and libero Craig Steszewski picked up 3 of his team leading 11 digs.
For the remainder of the match, Russ Friedland picked up the setting responsibilities for the first time this season. He ran an impressive offense with the team combining for 29 kills and only 6 errors to hit .397% over the last 2 games.
For Newbury, senior Eric Mattos and freshman Ken McNeeley each had 5 kills apiece with McNeely also pick up 3 blocks. Libero Alex Pires led the Nighthawks with 12 digs.
The Gulls return to action next Wednesday, as they will host Mount Ida in a 7 PM match at the Post Center.
