Three runners inside top-15 at Roger Williams invitational

Bristol, Rhode Island - The Endicott cross country teams officially opened the season over the weekend at the Roger Williams University Invitational held at Colt State Park in Bristol, Rhode Island. The women’s team placed two runners inside the top-15 while the men were paced by \#Greg Payne\#’s (North Attleboro, Mass.) 15th place finish.
The women’s team finished with a team score of 99, good for a fourth place showing. Wellesley (16), UMass-Dartmouth (62), and Roger Williams (69) were the top-three team finishers.
Freshman \#Jillian Mendes\# (Waterbury Center, Vt.) made an immediate impact as the Gulls’ top finisher. Her time of 20:54 in the 5k race was enough for 11th place individually. Classmate \#Kira DiCaprio\# (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) finished just two seconds behind her in 15th place.
Sophomore \#Holly Davis\# (Guilford, Conn.) finished third among Endicott runners and 25th in a field of 87 runners with a time of 21:34. Junior \#Brittaney Plante\# (Nashua, N.H.) came in 41st (22:26) while \#Kim Shepherd\# (Essex, Conn.) was seven second behind her in 42nd to round out Endicott’s top-five.
In all, 16 runners took part in the Invitational including four freshman competing at their first official meet for the Blue and Green.
The men’s team was led by Payne, who finished with a time of 16:55, just 45 seconds off the lead. Collectively, the Gulls finished in sixth place with a team score of 162. UMass-Dartmouth (38), Johnson & Wales (53), and Roger Williams (66) were the top-three team finishers.
\#Brendan Mitchell\# (Chelmsford, Mass.) was second among Endicott runners and 53rd in a field of 64. The senior finished in 19:57. \#Alex Dinola\# (Westford, Mass.) rounded out the Blue and Green’s top-three with a 56th place showing (20:24).
Both teams return next weekend when they travel to the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational in North Dartmouth.
