Ross Trohy Results-In Honor of Richard Ross
This Family Weekend, the Endicott College Sailing Team headed to the Ross Trophy at Courageous Sailing Center in Boston Harbor. It was their first Rhodes19 regatta, racing against other NEISA teams, alums and Courageous Sailing Center members.
Kate Bispham ('10) skippered boat 22 with crew Peter Hornat ('12) and Tucker Grose ('13) skippered boat 7 with crew Cate Brady ('12). It was a rain-filled day, in a busy Boston Harbor as the race course was surrounded by ferry, tugboat, and barge lanes on both sides. A gigantic barge being towed by an equally-large tugboat came straight through the course on the race committee's first attempt at the final race and it had to be restarted. Each race was one lap to a windward mark with an offset to a downwind gate and a mid-course finish. There were no rotations as there was only one large fleet of boats instead of the normal two. 6 and 1/2 races were completed before the day was over.
The race is held in memory of Richard Ross, who lost his life aboard Flight 11 on 9/11/01. With members of his family in attendance at the race, it was an honor to battle for the trophies for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. Ross' family members generously donated the trophies, plaque, food, and beverages for the day and even throughout the rain it was definitely a great day of sailing. Thanks to the Brady, Grose, and Bispham families that came and supported the Endicott College sailors and stood in the rain at the end of the pier (braving the driving winds, rain, and rave music coming from the fashion show on the pier)!
Results from Courageous Sailing Center:
A steady light breeze, SE 5-10, allowed for six good races, despite copious amounts of rain. 21 Rhodes 19's, including 17 college teams and four alumni teams enjoyed close racing right off Pier Four on inner Boston Harbor.
Following racing, CSC threw a wonderful awards luncheon. Relatives of Richard Ross, who was killed on flight 11 during 9/11, attended. Richard's brother-in-law spoke on the importance of sailing in their lives and the significant role played by Courageous Sailing Center with their generous youth programs for inner city kids. Large trophies were awarded to the top three undergrad teams. It is hoped to fill 24 boats next year with college teams to honor Richard Ross.
