April 13, 2007
BEVERLY, MA - The Endicott College softball team swept a Commonwealth Conference double-header with Eastern Nazarene College on Friday afternoon with 12-2 and 16-0 wins.
The Gulls got off to a slow start on a chilly afternoon but after taking a 3-1 lead in the second inning EC broke game one wide open in the fourth plating five runs in the frame. Paula McGinn (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) followed up a trio of singles from the bottom of the Endicott line up with a fielder's choice that drove in Maria Mangine (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and Sarah Spaziano (Norton, MA/Norton). McGinn and Jenn Elwell (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen Tech) would come around to score on an error by Crusaders third baseman Rebecca Welch (Norton, MA/NT Christian Academy) to give the Gulls a commanding 8-0 lead.
EC would add four more runs in the top of the sixth as Casey Shanley (Billerica, MA/Billerica) worked a bases loaded walk bringing in Jenna Lazar (Milton, MA/Milton). Spaziano would then follow up with an RBI single. She would come around to score later in the inning on an error that also allowed Shanley to score from third giving EC a 12-2 advantage.
Mangine pitched six strong innings for the Gulls as she allowed two runs on four hits while striking out five to pick up her fourth win of the season. Spaziano led Endicott's offense going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Shanley also had a good day at the dish going 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Game two was much of the same for Endicott as the Gulls scored five runs in the top of the first inning en route to a 16-0 victory. Jackie Collier (Swampscott, MA/Bishop Fenwick) tossed a five inning, complete game, one hit, shutout to pick up her fifth win of the season. Collier walked three while striking out seven and only a fourth inning Brittany Bedillion (Perkasie, PA/Penridge) single kept from ending the afternoon with a no-hitter.
Meghan Sargent (Salisbury, MA/Triton) and Rachel Pearson (Gales Ferry, CT/Ledyard) provided some big time pop at the heart of the Gulls order as the four and five hitters combined for eight RBI and five runs scored. Sargent went 2-for-2 with four runs scored and picked up two of her three RBI on a second inning round tripper. Pearson provided some fireworks of her own as she went 2-for-4 with a run scored and five RBI, including a monster two out grand slam that topped the rock façade in left center.
Danielle Sargent (Sabattus, ME/Oak Hill) had yet another big game at the plate going 2-for-3 with three RBI and four runs scored. Lynsey Vacchino (Kingston, MA/Silver Lake) went 2-for-3 while Jenna Lazar also played well picking up an RBI as well as three runs scored and three walks. The Gulls improve to 17-5 overall and 10-2 in the CCC with the wins while ENC falls to 4-14 overall and 2-6 in the conference. Endicott EC will attempt to extend its ten game win streak against cross town rivals Gordon College in a conference double-header Saturday with a first pitch set for 12:00 pm.
