Gulls Ground Hawks, Head to CCC Title Game
May 4, 2007
BRISTOL, RI - The Endicott College softball team will play for its fifth straight Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship on Saturday after beating Roger Williams University, 6-2 on Thursday afternoon.
The Gulls took an early 2-0 lead taking advantage of an RWU error as Jenna Lazar (Milton, MA/Milton), Danielle Sargent (Sabattus, ME/Oak Hill) and Meghan Sargent (Salisbury, MA/Triton) all reached base with just one out in the first inning. That brought up Rachel Pearson (Gales Ferry, CT/Ledyard) who reached on an error driving in Lazar and Danielle Sargent.
Roger Williams cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the second when Ashlyn Couture (Middleton, MA/Masconomet) doubled in Michelle Caprice (Jefferson, NJ/Pope John XIII). The Blue and Green would answer right back with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning.
The Gulls two, three and four hitters spelt disaster for their opponents once again as Danielle Sargent and Meghan Sarget both reached base with two outs bringing up Pearson who came through in the clutch yet again with a two out, two RBI single to make it 4-1.
Roger Williams make it 4-2 in the bottom of the inning but EC scored a run in the fifth inning on an RBI double from Meghan Sargent and added a sixth run in the top of the seventh when Sarah Spaziano (Norton, MA/Norton) drove in Sargent from second base with an RBI single to make it 6-2 and seal the win for the Gulls.
Jenn Elwell (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen Tech) was impressive in the circle for Endicott as she picked up the win going seven innings and allowing two runs, both unearned, on six hits while striking out five. Elwell has posted an impressive 1.62 ERA and an 11-2 record on the season and has led the Blue and Green to two CCC tournament wins.
The Gulls, who were swept by RWU in the regular season, took a huge step in their `drive for five' by winning Thursday. EC will now face the winner of the Roger Williams Curry game to be played a 10 am Saturday in Bristol, RI.
The tournament's double elimination format puts Endicott in the drivers seat as the Gulls could potentially win the title by playing just one game, while Roger Williams or Curry would have to win three games in one day to take the title. The championship round has the first pitch slated for 12:00 pm on Saturday in Bristol, RI with a second, if necessary, game set for 2:00 pm.
