WALTHAM, Mass. — The Endicott softball team dropped its season-opening non-conference doubleheader to MIT, 4-2 & 5-3 (6 inn.), on Wednesday evening at the Bentley University Softball Field.
GAME ONE: MIT 4, Endicott 3
WP (1-0): Emily Watson (Weddington, N.C.) — 3.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 1 K
LP (0-1): Emma Sheehan (Plainville, Mass.) — 0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Tied 3-3 heading to the bottom of the 7th, the Engineers hit a walkoff single to center field to pick up the victory.
Endicott jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first inning behind a Mia Mitchell (Medford, Mass.) double steal and an Ava Kelley (Norfolk, Mass.) RBI single to left field.
MIT then responded in the bottom of the second with two of its own. An Abby McClaflin (Easthampton, Mass.) bases loaded walk produced another Gulls run in the top of the 4th, but an Engineer homer in the bottom of the fifth tied the game at three apiece.
Kristen Beebe (Brentwood, N.H.) got the start as she pitched 5.2 IP, allowing seven hits and striking out six.
GAME TWO: MIT 5, Endicott 3 (6 Inn.)
WP (1-0): Sarah Blackett (St. Petersburg, Fla.) — 4 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 3 K
LP (0-1): Analise Grady (Reading, Mass.) — 4 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
SV (1): Nicole Johnston (St. Charles, Ill.) — 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
Endicott raced out to another 2-0 lead in the top of the first with doubles by McClaflin and Elyse Saccoccio (Coventry, R.I.).
The Engineers answered with a five-run third and never looked back, using two RBI singles, a two-run error, and a sacrifice fly to account for their scoring.
The Gulls pushed one more across the board as Kylyn McLaren (Rochester, N.H.) scored on a wild pitch, but were held hitless the rest of the way in the setback.
