EC Defeats Three-Time Defending CCC Champ, Salve Regina, 59-48

The Endicott College Gulls defeated three-time defending CCC Champion, Salve Regina, today, 59-48, in Beverly, MA. The Gulls took a 31-18 half-time lead and never gave it up as they beat the CCC south division preseason favorite, Seahawks.
After exchanging baskets in the first 6 minutes, the Gulls took the lead for good on a three by Jodi Brown at 13:20. Brown and Liz Yuneman lit it up behind the arc in the first half (combining for 5 three's), while freshman Aubrey Drugan was steady at the foul line, scoring 7 of 8 free throw attempts. The Gulls defense held Salve to 22% field goal shooting in the first half.
Salve Regina stepped up their own pressure in the second half holding the Gulls to just 4 made field goals in the first 10 minutes. The Seahawks pulled within four with four minutes to go behind 11 second half points from Jennifer Leahy and 3 three's by Kelly Mallon.
The Gulls had an answer of their own, however, as forward Holly Beth Wojcik tallied a double-double on the day with 11 points (all in the second half) and 10 rebounds (team high). In the final minutes, Lisa Chartier and Carly Haynes hit big baskets for the Gulls to help extend the lead back to double-digits, while Wojcik, who secured key rebounds, and Brown each went 2 for 2 from the stripe.
EC shot 77% from the stripe, hitting 20 of 26 free throw attempts. It was a well balanced attack for the Gulls with four players scoring in double-digits. Brown led all Endicott scorers with 13 points, Wojcik finished with 11, while Chartier and Drugan both tallied 10. Drugan dished out a game high 7 assists to go along with her 8 for 10 shooting from the free throw line.
The Seahawks were led by Mallon with 16 points, Leahy with 11 and Allison Moen with 9 points.
The Gulls (4-7, 2-1) are home again on Tuesday versus conference member UNE at 6:00. Salve Regina (6-4, 5-1) hosts Regis at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening.
