BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott College women’s basketball team received a pair of double-doubles, including a 21 point-11 rebound performance from the 2010 The Commonwealth Coast Conference Co-Player of the Year \#Ceciley Chisholm\# (Lexington, Mass.), as the Gulls defeated Western New England College, 59-57, in the TCCC Quarterfinals on Tuesday night in Beverly, Mass. The Blue and Green improve to 19-6 overall while the Golden Bears finish their season at 15-10.
Endicott struck first as the Gulls took an 11-5 lead on a layup by Chisholm with 13:48 before WNEC came racing back to cut the Gull lead to 14-13 nearly five minutes later. Endicott rebuilt its lead to five before the Golden Bears went on an 8-0 run to take a three point lead on back-to-back threes by Taryn Belowsky (New Haven, Conn.) and Kailah Al-Darraji (Dover, N.H.) and a jumper by Loren Stock (Rocky Hill, Conn.). The Gulls responded with a 12-3 run of their own capped off by another Chisholm layup to head into the half leading, 30-24.
\#Ashley Wright\# (Merrimack, N.H.) led all scorers at the break with 11 points while Chisholm posted 10 points and seven rebounds in the frame. WNEC was led by TCCC Rookie of the Year Emily Savino’s (Ellington, Conn.) eight points and three rebounds. Both teams struggled from the field as they shot less than 35% with Western New England going 9-for-26 (34.6%) from the floor and the Gulls shooting 10-for-30 (33.3%).
Chisholm picked up where she left off before the half, giving the Gulls their largest lead of the game, 32-24, on a layup only :26 seconds into the period. WNEC would claw its way back into the game, tying the score at 36-all with 13:28 remaining but Endicott used an 8-1 run to build their lead back to seven.
WNEC’s Al-Darraji scored the next six points for the visitors as the Golden Bears cut the lead back to one with just over 10 minutes to play. \#Kate Kovach\# (Moon Township, Pa.) buried a three and then converted one-of-two free-throws to give Endicott another five point lead, however WNEC would get it back to one on back-to-back baskets from Sarah Proper (Coxsackie, N.Y.). Western New England would keep it a one possession game throughout the final four minutes before \#Ashley Wright\# found a streaking \#Ashley Vitale\# (Wilmington, Mass.) for a fast-break layup for a four-point lead.
Following a WNEC timeout, Kailah Al-Darraji buried a three to make it a one-point game, 56-55. On the ensuing possession, the Gulls ran the clock down to under :15 seconds when Chisholm netted a right-handed layup with only three seconds showing on the shot clock to turn their one point lead into a three-point advantage, 58-55.
\#Ashley Wright\# would commit a foul on the ensuing WNEC possession but Emily Savino would miss the front end of a 1-and-1 and Chisholm grabbed the rebound, was fouled, and made one of two free-throws to seal the game for the Gulls.
