Gulls Victorious in Double Overtime on the Road; Whitney Tallies the Game Winner

Followed behind an overtime and game winner by sophomore Emily Whitney (Rye, N.H.) the Gulls lifted to a 12-11 triumph. Endicott improves to 2-1 on the season as the Lyons fall to 2-4.

Followed behind an overtime and game winner by sophomore Emily Whitney (Rye, N.H.) the Gulls lifted to a 12-11 triumph. Endicott improves to 2-1 on the season as the Lyons fall to 2-4.
The Gulls will take the field next on Tuesday, March 17th as they host NESCAC foe Bates for a 5:00 p.m. matchup. Endicott is 1-4 against Bates and head coach, Morgan Maciewicz will look to take down her alma mater in Gulls territory. The Lyons will play next on Wednesday, March 18th as they compete with non-conference opponent Roger Williams in Bristol at 4:00 p.m.
Overall the Gulls were led by four goals from Whitney followed by two each from sophomore Meghan Lennon (Canton, Mass.), and seniors Ellie Clayman (Beverly, Mass.) and Kirsten Thor (Longmeadow, Mass.). Helping create those scoring opportunities was in the hands of senior Siri Mason (Williamstown, Mass.) who led a game-high three assists in the victory.
Between the pipes sophomore Maura Grady (Marblehead, Mass.) posted one of her best games of the season posting 12 saves for the win.
The first half was an absolute battle as the Blue and Green just edged the Lyons 7-6. Lennon started the scoring for both sides in the opening seconds as she along with freshman Erin McCarthy (Old Lyme, Conn.) made a combo play to goal to take a 1-0 lead. Wheaton would quickly answer back as junior Madison Cohen (East Lyme, Conn.) made it tie game minutes later.
The Blue and Green answered back by scoring three straight goals by Whitney, Clayman and Thor to take the 4-1 advantage with 20 minutes remaining in the first half. For the Lyons freshman Katie Peters (Medway, Mass.) followed with two straight goals to get back within one.
For the remainder of the half the Gulls would tally three more goals with Whitney and Thor each recording their second of the day while McCarthy earned her first career goal in an Endicott uniform. For the Lyons they would also follow with three more goals to make it a one goal game heading into the second half.
In the second 30 minutes of play both sides battled back and forth, but the Lyons would outscore Endicott 4-3 in the half to force an overtime period. The Blue and Green opened up the half with back to back goals from sophomore duo, Whitney and Lennon both with help from Mason to make it a 9-6 score.
Eager to defend their home turf Wheaton answered back by going on a four-goal run led by two goals from junior Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt.) to give the Lyons a one goal lead with just 2:33 left in regulation. With the game on the line Clayman found the back of the net on a clutch opportunity with 1:58 to force an overtime as the game as tied at 10-10.
In the first series of overtime Siri Mason recorded her first goal of the season at 3:01 to take the lead. However senior Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass.) took advantage of a free position opportunity for the Lyons to again put the game at a stalemate and force a second series of overtime.
In the second series of overtime both sides worked to find the back of the net for most of the six minutes of play. Finally on a free position opportunity with 2:29 remaining Whitney recorded the game winner to lift to a 12-11 victory.
