Gulls Fall to Regional Foe Bates Despite Four Goals From Clayman

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott women's lacrosse team hosted NESCAC foe, Bates on Tuesday evening for a non-conference matchup. Despite the four goals from senior Ellie Clayman (Beverly, Mass.) the Bobcats lifted to a 10-7 victory behind four goals from junior Moriah Greenstein (Glenmont, N.Y.). Endicott falls to 2-2 while Bates improves to 5-3.

Endicott will take the field next on Thursday, March 19^th as they travel to non-regional opponent Babson for a 4:00 p.m. matchup. Bates will see action next on Saturday, March 21^st as they host conference opponent Williams at noon.

Behind the four goals by Clayman, sophomores Emily Whitney (Rye, N.H.), Emily Cutting (Ferrisburgh, Vt.) and senior Katie Tierney (South Hadley, Mass.) each found the back of the net for the Blue and Green. For the Bobcats, junior Emma Brinkman (Rye, N.Y.) followed with two while three others tallied one.

Clayman and senior Siri Mason (Williamstown, Mass.) were a force on the draw control as they combined for nine of the 10 for the Gulls. Working hard defensively, Mason led a game-high four caused turnovers while goalkeeper, Maura Grady (Marblehead, Mass.) and sophomore Meghan Lennon (Canton, Mass.) each forced three.

The first half was a battle as Bates took the 5-2 lead. The Bobcats opened up the game with back to back goals from Brinkman and senior Emma Getsinger (Darien, Conn.). Two minutes later Whitney would answer back to get the Gulls back within one, as she made a quick move to goal to find the back of the net. However, Bates would come back to score three straight goals to take the 5-1 lead as three different Bobcats scored. Clayman would tally her first goal of the game with 5:34 remaining in the first to make it a 5-2 score heading into half.

The second half was a bigger battle as both sides each tallied five goals, led by three goals by both Clayman and Greenstein. Bates opened up the half in the opening draw as junior Kelan McCann (Shrewsbury, Mass.) made a quick move to goal to make it a 6-2 game. However, the Blue and Green quickly answered back as Clayman scored back to back goals to get Endicott within two by the 25:59 mark.

After a goal from Greenstein, Endicott scored another two straight goals from Cutting and Tierney with the help of Clayman and senior Kirsten Thor (Longmeadow, Mass.) to make it a tight one goal game. Holding the one goal lead, freshman Teal Otley (Cumberland, Maine) and Greenstein went back to back to kick the lead back up to three for a 9-6 score.

Both sides would tally one more goal but the Gulls efforts were not enough as they fell to a tough 10-7 decision. This week's Commowealth Coast Conference (CCC) Defensive Player of the Week, Grady made seven saves in the battle while her counterpart, junior Hannah Jeffrey (Greenwich, Conn.) made 11 stops in the victory.
