What inspired you to pursue an internship at this organization or what inspired you to go into the specific industry in which you are working?
I knew coming into college that I wanted to go into law enforcement, so I targeted all of my internships to police departments. I heard about this internship during my junior year and was immediately interested based on what I heard from previous Endicott interns. I was looking for an internship site that let me work hands-on to gain experience in the field and provided a variety of opportunities. This internship was a perfect fit as I was able to aid in investigations, visit specialized units, and attend court cases.
What were some of your most meaningful experiences on the job and what did you learn?
I had many memorable experiences at my internship site between job experience and interactions with troopers and others. I was able to work with a few different troopers on cases to learn different techniques for investigating crimes. In talking with some of the troopers, it was also nice to get their career advice and hear from them about their process of becoming a trooper. Also, I was able to attend court cases and talk to victim's families and see how much they felt the detectives had helped them and the respect they had for them. In a time where police officers are constantly on the news for negative reasons, it was nice to talk to people impacted by crime and the real difference they felt being made by the police and justice system. They were very supportive of me when I told them I wanted to become a Trooper and anytime I wasn't in court, they asked about me, which was nice to hear. I was also able to visit specialized units, such as crime scene services, and explore other options for advancement in the law enforcement field.
How did your internship help clarify your postgraduate career pursuits?
My internship definitely confirmed my career choice and made me even more excited about the future. I am currently in the hiring process for a position as a state trooper and hope that my internship experience will help me stand out in the process.
What advice would you give students that are either just starting the internship program at Endicott or students that will be going on semester-long internship?
Start applying early to have a better chance of getting one you really want. Ask questions of your potential site to find out what you will really be able to do, not just pushing papers. Every internship starts slow, don't get discouraged, show up every day with a positive attitude and be willing to do any task so a site supervisor knows they can trust you enough to handle the important things.
