Gulls Can't Tame Lyons
Sept. 6, 2006
BEVERLY, MA - Wheaton College got second half goals from junior Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross) and sophomore Jessica Bramucci (Ludlow, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) to get past Endicott College, 4-2, Wednesday night in a non-conference match at Endicott Stadium.
The Lyons entered Wednesday night's game ranked third in the latest NSCAA/Adidass New England Regional Poll while EC sat in the No. 6 slot in the poll. And it was Wheaton (3-0, 0-0 NEWMAC) who got the early jump, scoring less than five minutes into the contest on a breakaway goal by freshman Kathleen Carroll (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz Central). The Lyons doubled the lead in the 36th minute on Konopka's first tally that rattled off the far post and into the back of the goal.
The Gulls quickly responded with an Ashley Clark (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket) tally at the 40:50 mark of the game and scored the equalizer with just 27 seconds to play in the first half when freshman Caitlin Flynn (Mattituck, NY/Southold) set up sophomore Cali Collin (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh). Sophomore Shannon Pilsbury (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) recorded the assist on the Clark's goal.
The second half belonged to Wheaton, however, as the Lyons out shot EC 18-2. Konopka picked up her second goals on the night 13 minutes into the final half and Bramucci doubled the lead in the 78th minute of play.
Endicott senior netminder Tina Loguidice (Hyde Park, NY/F.D. Roosevelt) made eight saves in goal while Elana Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, MA/Brookline) and Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) split time to get the win for the Lyons.
Wheaton returns home Saturday to face Western Connecticut while the Gulls travel to Wentworth Saturday for their conference opener.
