11th-ranked Williams too much for Endicott
Sept. 6, 2008
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Endicott College women's soccer team dropped its second-straight decision on Saturday, falling to No. 11 Williams College, 4-1, in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The Gulls are now 1-2 overall.
The defensive play by the Ephs was solid all game long, allowing only four shots on goal in ninety minutes of play. The first 25 minutes of the game were played in the middle of the field, as the Williams offense struggled to move the ball forward while the defense kept Endicott at bay.
Williams finally broke through in the 27th minute due to the play of Brianna Wolfson (Brookeville, N.Y.) and Gabrielle Woodson (Plano, Texas). The two players scored 24 of the Ephs' 50 goals last season, and when Wolfson entered the game with the clock nearing the twenty-minute mark, it seemed to be only a matter of time before something positive happened on the field.
Wolfson set up a nice tally as she headed the ball to Woodson on the right side, allowing her to unleash a shot to the far left corner. Freshman Bret Eisenhart (Seattle, Wash.) had a heads up play, diving legs first into the goal post for the 1-0 lead.
The Ephs continued their improved offensive attack in the second period. Woodson found herself in the thick of the play once again, scoring the game-winning goal at the 56:39 mark. Just three minutes later, Wolfson found the goal to put Williams ahead 3-1. Freshman Nicole Stenquist (Hudson, Mass.) headed the ball to Woodson for a shot that was initially turned away by goalkeeper Amy Meuse (Saugus, Mass.). Wolfson was able to capitalize on the rebound, placing the ball into the back right corner.
Senior captain Clare Gallagher (Cranford, N.J.) scored Williams' final goal at the 64:21 mark, giving the Ephs a 4-0 lead. The Gulls were able to break the shutout bid as Karyn Plante (Sanford, Maine) broke through off a feed from Caitlin Flynn (Southold, N.Y.) to close the game out at 4-1.
Williams looks to keep rolling next Saturday as the Ephs get their first taste of NESCAC competition when they visit Bates. Endicott hopes to rebound as it returns home for a match with Wellesley at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening.
