Big first half lifts Endicott past Salve, 3-0
Oct. 4, 2008
BEVERLY, Mass. - The Endicott College women's soccer team extended its consecutive shutout streak to four in a row as the Gulls fired their way past Salve Regina University, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon in Beverly, Mass. The win marks Endicott's seventh-straight and improves the hosts to 8-2-1 (7-0-0 TCCC), while Salve Regina dips to 3-6-0 (2-3-0 TCCC).
The Gulls quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Kayla Corbett (Danvers, Mass.) placed a perfect shot from 12 yards out into the upper 90, just out of reach of an outstretched Katie Vaudrain (Pawtucket, R.I.) at 5:46 of the opening half. Endicott doubled the lead in the 24th minute as Caitlin Flynn (Southold, N.Y.) notched her eighth of the year off a rebound shot from Colleen Pepin (Fairhaven, Mass.) for the 2-0 advantage.
Endicott was not done scoring in the opening half as EC pulled ahead by three as Kellie Lajoie (York, Maine) fired a bid that glanced off Vaudrain's hands and trickled across the goal line. Sophomore Brianna Russo (Davners, Mass.) was credited with the assist.
The three first half goals proved to be an insurmountable hole for the Seahawks to climb out of. With a comfortable lead, Endicott stacked the defensive end of the field and denied the visitors any opportunity to generate offense. Salve Regina goalkeeper Katie Vaudrain made 14 saves for the Seahawks while the Endicott net minders were only forced to make four saves in the win.
The Gulls held a decisive 32-4 shots advantage, and a 10-2 edge in corner kicks. Endicott's Amy Meuse (Saugus, Mass.) and Nicole Lawlor (Mansfield, Mass.) combined for the Gulls' sixth shutout of the season. Endicott has now allowed just two goals in seven conference games.
Endicott looks to keep its shutout streak going on Tuesday afternoon as the Gulls visit cross-town rival Gordon College for a 3:30 p.m. match-up with the Fighting Scots. Salve Regina hopes to rebound on Tuesday at Roger Williams at 4:00 p.m.
