Second half surge pushes Gulls past NEC
Oct. 18, 2008
BEVERLY, Mass. - Endicott College scored three goals in a span of 1:48 in the second half, lifting the host Gulls past visiting New England College, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon in Beverly, Massachusetts. The win pushes Endicott's unbeaten streak to 12 games while improving its record to 11-2-2 (10-0-1 TCCC). NEC slips to 7-7-1 and 5-4-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference.
Endicott badly out chanced the visiting Pilgrims all afternoon, holding a 32-6 advantage in shots. Junior forward Caitlin Flynn (Southold, N.Y.) put the Gulls ahead 19:06 into the game as she stole the ball inside the box and buried a shot past goalkeeper Kerry Hughes (Wallkill, N.Y.). The two teams would enter the intermission with the Blue and Green holding a 1-0 advantage.
Endicott put the game out of reach in the 68th minute as Colleen Pepin (Fairhaven, Mass.) carried the ball down the left side and placed a perfect shot into the upper-left 90 for the 2-0 lead. Allyson Bellemore (Manchester, N.H.) then made it a three goal advantage as he connected on a feed from Flynn and found the lower-right corner just 1:06 later. If that wasn't enough, Flynn capped off the scoring run just 42 seconds after that with a well-placed shot to left of an outstretched Hughes.
Nicole Lawlor (Mansfield, Mass.) and Elise Berry (Londonderry, N.H.) combined for five saves in the shutout win. Kerry Hughes made 12 stops in the losing effort for the Pilgrims.
Endicott returns to action on Tuesday afternoon as the Blue and Green host the University of New England in an important TCCC match-up beginning at 3:30 p.m. NEC looks to rebound at Western New England on 0Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
