CNE FIRST ROUND: No. 5 Women's Tennis Takes Down No. 4 Roger Williams, 4-0
BRISTOL, R.I. – The fifth-seeded Endicott women's tennis team defeated fourth-seeded Roger Williams, 4-0, in the first round of the Conference of New England (CNE) Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at the Roger Williams Tennis Courts.
Endicott secured the victory over a two-day span, as rain forced the match to be suspended midway through the first set of singles action.
The Gulls won the doubles point on Tuesday by claiming victories at No. 1 and No. 3 to gain the early 1-0 momentum.
Then in singles action on Wednesday, Caroline Sutliffe (Duxbury, Mass.) gave Endicott a 2-0 advantage at No. 3 singles with a triumph in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Amber Woods (Scarborough, Maine) followed with another win shortly after Sutliffe, making it 3-0 Gulls, with a swift 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 6 singles, while Jillian Friedman (Austin, Texas) punched Endicott's ticket into the CNE Semifinals with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at No. 2 singles.
BEYOND THE BOX
- Today's match was played to decision due to CNE Tournament rules.
- Woods has won three singles matches in a row.
- In doubles action, Emily Leclerc (Manchester, N.H.) and Sutliffe provided the victory at No. 1 doubles, and Abbey Fleming (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and Woods won a hard-fought 7-6 (7-5) match at No. 3 doubles.
- Endicott went 52-21 (.712) in overall singles play and 23-13 (.639) in overall doubles play during the regular season.
WHAT'S NEXT
No. 5 Endicott (8-6) advances to the CNE Semifinals on Saturday, November 1, and will travel to take on No. 1 Colby-Sawyer at 1 PM. Roger Williams sees its season come to a close with a record of 13-3.
