BEVERLY, Mass. – In our third installment of #TrackTuesday we get to know women's cross country and track & field assistant coach Erin Haynes. Endicott Athletics (EC): What was it like to be an Endicott student-athlete?
Erin Haynes '15 (EH): Being a student-athlete at Endicott was one of the best decisions I made in college. I have always loved the feeling of being part of a team, and being a member of the cross country team was one of the best team environments I could ask for. Being a part of Endicott Athletics has been great, and I have been able to see and experience the support and respect all of the Endicott teams have for each other.
EC: What were your academic experiences like?
EH: As an Athletic Training major and a student-athlete, academics were challenging because of the extensive internships that athletic training majors must complete all four years. However, this experience taught me time management skills and how to balance my time between athletics and academics. I also had a unique perspective because as a student-athletic trainer at Endicott, I had the opportunity to work with a number of sports teams, and build relationships with other student athletes who suffered injuries during their seasons who came to the staff for treatment. I really enjoyed my time working with the amazing athletic training staff at Endicott, and they definitely enhanced my learning experiences. I would like to think I was a very focused student who kept a good balance between academics and running.
EC: Describe what your Endicott education means to you.
EH: I could not have asked for a better Endicott experience, and education. My favorite part of the education I received at Endicott was the internship program. Doing internships in both the athletic training and physical therapy settings throughout all four years at Endicott was the most valuable thing for me. I really do believe that doing internships and exposing yourself to the environment that you will be working in after college helps you to grow academically and professionally. I would not be the successful athletic trainer and Doctorate of Physical Therapy student that I am today without my Endicott education.
EC: How has being a part of this program both as a student-athlete and a coach changed your perspective?
EH: I am lucky to be a part of an amazing coaching staff with both Coach Lange and Coach Davis. They are both extremely knowledgeable about the sport, and it is so much fun learning from them. I think being a part of this program as a student-athlete before becoming a coach has given me a different perspective because I was in these athletes' shoes just two years ago. I understand the stresses that go into balancing academics with athletics, and I am able to help the athletes and give advice when they are struggling through a hard time. I am also able to appreciate all of the hard work that goes into coaching, as well as all of the hard work that the athletes put into training.
EC: How have you seen the cross country programs change over your time with them?
EH: I absolutely have seen both teams grow tremendously from my time as an athlete to a coach. When I first joined cross country there were not enough runners for the men's team to even score at a meet, and this year our men's team was second at the CCC Championship. It was such a huge change for the team to make over just four years. The women's team has grown and changed so much as well. They have had the best finishes in program history at both the CCC Championships and the NCAA Regionals recently, and the team continues to grow larger and stronger each year. I am so thankful for the privilege I've had to continue to watch both teams grow.
