Second-half flurry leads Endicott to 3-1 win over St. Joseph’s (Maine)

The Gulls travel to MIT on Thursday, September 27th for a non-conference game with the Engineers before hosting the University of New England on Homecoming Saturday in a matchup of 2-0 conference teams.
Senior forward and captain Hannah Thornberg (Oakland, Maine), after collecting CCC Player of the Week honors on Monday, scored two of Endicott's three goals against the Monks. Thornberg's first tally came just 4:10 into the first half when a right-to-left cross by junior Stacie Teevens (Westborough, Mass.) was one-timed by Thornberg into the corner of the cage to put the Gulls on top 1-0.
Endicott's first half lead was short-lived when St. Joseph's (Maine) junior defender Carley Denis (Lewiston, Maine) evened the score at 1-1, with an assist to Theresa Hendrix (Scarborough, Maine), in the 16th minute of the game. The two teams went into halftime with the knotted at one goal apiece.
Nineteen minutes passed in the second half before Endicott scored the game-winning goal off the stick of sophomore forward Emily Sawchuck (Cumberland, Maine), her fourth goal of the season and her first game-winner. Sawchuck's goal came off an assist from fellow sophomore Mackenzie Hurst (Gilford, N.H.).
With momentum and the lead, the Blue and Green delivered a flurry of shots with less than five minutes remaining in regulation on Monks senior goalie Taylor Allison (Pawtucket, R.I.) who would finish with nine saves in the game. Thornberg would beat Allison with just 52 ticks left on the clock to seal the Endicott win over St. Joseph's (Maine).
Endicott's 3-1 victory marked the first time since the 2005 season that an Endicott-St. Joseph's (Maine) game was decided by more than one goal.
Thornberg, now with 11 goals, three assists, and 25 points on the season, has continued to climb Endicott's all-time leaders list in points and goals. She currently has 44 goals, 15 assists, and 103 points for her collegiate career.
The Gulls defense managed to hold the Monks to just two shots and three penalty corners in the game. Endicott finished with 14 shots, 12 on net, and seven penalty corners. Senior goalie Taylor Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.) finished with one save as she improved to 6-2 with one shutout on the year.
