The
Endicott men's and women's cross country teams will enter the
2012-13 season with a new head coach as former Gulls assistant and
UMass Lowell All-American runner Michael Toomey takes over the
program starting this fall.
Toomey
returns to Endicott after three seasons (2009-11) as the head coach
of the Marblehead High School girls indoor and outdoor track
teams. Toomey coached Marblehead to their most successful
seasons in program history while doubling participation and
producing indoor and outdoor track team titles and individual state
champions in spring, distance and jumping events. He is a
six-time Northeastern Conference Coach of the Year in Cross Country
and Track as well as a two-time Salem News and Lynn Item Coach of
the Year honoree.
In the
fall of 2010, Toomey was on board with the Gulls cross country
program as an assistant coach, providing running workouts and
strength training programs for student-athletes. He was an
integral part of the recruiting process and organization of the
team's schedule.
“I
am excited to welcome back Coach Toomey, as well as assistant
coach Amy Hubbard who
did a phenomenal job last season, to the Endicott Community,”
said Director of Athletics Brian Wylie.
“I am confident the cross country program, under the
leadership of Coach Toomey, will experience success as conference
champions and a regional force in the near
future.”
Toomey's
competitive experience spans 18 years from his running days at Lynn
English High School where he was state champion in the mile and a
Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic in cross
country. His career progressed to UMass Lowell where he was
named All-American by the NCAA in cross country. As a team,
the River Hawks captured the 1991 NCAA Championship thanks to
Toomey's input. UMass Lowell would induct Toomey in their
Hall of Fame in 2006. Following his collegiate career, Toomey
continued to train as a middle distance runner under Bob Sevene for
Reebok Boston from 1998-2004.
Currently,
Toomey continues to own and operate Toomey Sports Running Center, a
private coaching company dedicated to post-collegiate runners in
the areas of track and cross country. One of his clients, Jen
Toomey was a United States Champion in the 800m and 1500m and was a
fourth place finisher at the 2004 World Indoor Championships.
Toomey has also run the North Shore Running Project since 2007 as a
head coach.
Toomey is
a USATF certified coach and also holds certifications in active
release technique and massage therapy. He runs camps and
clinics through the North Shore Running Project, the Salem Parks
and Recreation Department, and High Altitude Camp. He has
also volunteered his services as the USA Track and Field Chairman,
For Jake's Sake, the Phoenix Marathon, the World Championships, and
Malden Special Olympics.
