Rugby is a completely different sport than any other game played in America. It is the fastest growing team sport in America and it challenges players both mentally and physically. It is the 2nd most played sport on the planet. In 2016, rugby will once again be a part of the Olympic Games. Rugby is a lifetime experience that combines of soccer, football and wrestling into one sport. Rugby is called a “gentlemen’s game”, and it has a large international fraternity. When playing a rugby game, each team tries to dominate their opponents yet abides by the rules of the game. One major difference about rugby is that after the match, there is a special camaraderie and respect bringing both teams together and treating each other like “brothers” or “sisters”.
Our vision for this team is to be a successful club team in fall of 2013. Our plan is to introduce the game at a slow pace to focus on the basics. A rugby game is comprised of 15 players on a side. Players of all sizes and abilities are needed to fill the roster. During the game the ball can never be passed forward, like an option in football. Unlike football, rugby is a ‘flowing’ game and doesn’t stop after each tackle.
We will practice 1-2 times a week during the fall semester. We will be hosting an intramural flag sevens rugby tournament near the end of the semester. In the spring we look to set up a few flag tournaments as well as a couple scrimmages against local collegiate rugby schools. We believe this plan will not only allow us to be ready to join our league in the fall but to compete against the best rugby teams in our league.
Most students will start knowing nothing about the sport and will admit the best way to learn is by coming out and playing. Come find out how rugby can make a difference in your life.
