Cross Country Competes at ECAC Fall Championships
November 7, 2011
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Endicott men’s and women’s cross country teams braved the cold and snow of western New England at the CCC Championships two weeks ago. A week later into the year, they found brilliant sunshine and temperatures in the 50’s for last week’s Eastern College Athletic Conference (CCC) Championship meet on the campus of Williams College.
The women’s team came on strong placing 20th out of 40 teams, with a total of 629 points. The Gulls were separated by just 14 points from Roger Williams, who was in 18th place and Salve Regina who took 19th. Junior Kim Shepherd (Essex, Conn.) took 84th place, in a time of 25:49, showing her mettle by pulling away from the pack to run strong and steady throughout the 6k. Right behind her in 85th place with a time of 29:54 was sophomore Jillian Mendes (Waterbury Center, Vt.), who worked hard with 600 meters to go and made a decisive move to pass several runners before the finish line.
Standout freshman Jocelyn Kane (East Longmeadow, Mass.) came in at 27:07, placing 138 among the talented field. “Jocelyn continues to improve week after week and has a great running future to look forward to,” said Head Coach Sharyn Longo.
Rounding out the top five to factor in to the scoring for the Gulls were two seniors, Brittaney Plante (Nashua, N.H.), in 27:44 placing 162nd, and Deanne Slobin (Old Saybrook, Conn.), who came in at 170th in 27:57. Holly Davis (Guilford, Conn.) and Monica Gardner (Essex Junction, Vt.) finished sixth and seventh for Endicott causing displacement for other teams and helping the Gulls capture 20th place.
Endicott senior Greg Payne (N. Attleboro, Mass.) ran a 28:07 8k race to place 59th out of 300 male competitors, representing 44 teams. Through the first mile and a half Greg was in the middle of the pack but as the men went into the hills the first time he began moving up the ranks. By the time the men went into the hills the second time Greg had positioned himself amongst the top 75. With one last effort and 800 meters of open field to go, Greg changed gears and brought in his best ECAC place and time in his four year career.
Despite a nagging knee injury, freshman Alex Walecka (Dartmouth, Mass.) toughed out a time of 33:27, finishing in 268th place.
The cross country season will conclude Saturday, November 12th in Maine at Bowdoin College with the NCAA DIII Regional Meet.
