Gulls End Season at NCAA Regional Championships
November 14, 2011
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Cool and sunny trails awaited the Endicott cross country teams last Saturday at Bowdoin College for the NCAA DIII Regional meet. The weather was perfect for the meet that featured the largest regional field in the country.
Three hundred and fifty-three female athletes, representing fifty-two schools came to Brunswick hoping to qualify for the NCAA championship meet. The Gulls women’s team took 38th overall.
Three hundred and twenty-one runners, representing fifty-four teams competed in the men’s competition. Senior captain Greg Payne (N. Attleboro, Mass.) finished 126th in the men’s race, running a time of 27:11 in his final collegiate meet.
For the first mile and a half, the field of men had not streamlined out of a pack, and the pace remained fast. It wasn’t until the 2.5 mile mark that the pack thinned out and Payne held firm in his final spot.
Leading the way for the Lady Gulls was sophomore dependable Jillian Mendes (Waterbury Center, Vt.), and junior Kim Shepherd (Essex, Conn.), who has been strong and steady this season. Mendes ran a time of 25:16 and placed 196th, while Shepherd was only one spot and one second behind her.
Right on their heels was freshman Jocelyn Kane (East Longmeadow, Mass.), with a time of 26:09. Senior co-captain Brittaney Plante (Nashua, N.H.) closed out her four year running career with a strong time of 26:50 on the hard pack trails at Bowdoin. With an injured Gull out of commission, Monica Gardner (Essex Junction, Vt.) was needed to fill a gap and she came up with a big effort in 27:02, her best 6k time ever. Senior Deanne Slobin (Old Saybrook, Conn.), was just behind her, wrapped up her running career on a high note with her solid best 6k time of 27:10.
All Endicott runners closed out the season in style by posting either their personal best time or place in this high caliber race for their 6k and 8k distances.
